I am new to Chess.com and in addition I am inexperienced. Is there a place  where I can locate instruction on what the trainee should be attempting to do. It seems that most of the time the goal is to find a piece to take in one move in others it is not clear what I should my task is.Undecided

Simply, it is to find the best move or series of moves. Usually this involves trying to win a piece, checkmate, or push towards checkmate. Sometimes it may be a sequence to get you out of trouble. Playing more, watching the solutions, and reading in problem comments should help.

Tactics Trainer presents you with a position containing an immediate advantage, it's your job to find it! Sometimes it's a sequence leading to mate, other times it's a large material gain. The faster you find it the more points you score. Often the correct move will involve a sacrifice or some other counter-intuitive looking move.

After you try a problem, before you move on to the next one, you can see (and add) comments at the bottom of the page.  If you didn't understand the problem, read the comments - someone may have explained it.  If that doesn't help, there is also a "view analysis" (I think that's how it's phrased) that may help.

For many players, the problems that they easily solve are the ones they like the best.  After all, everyone likes to succeed.  But where you really learn is on the problems you got wrong or had a lot of trouble figuring out.  When you have trouble with a problem, spend more time on it.  Make sure that you understand that particular problem.  Go over the solution several times so it will sink in.

Most problems are based on common patterns.  It's possible you'll never see that exact position again - but the general patterns tend to repeat quite a bit.  When you do enough tactical problems and end game problems, then a lot of them tend to be obvious.

huchin,

I see you are a diamond user.

a. diamond users can use unlimited time on chess mentor.   (where multiple solutions are possible to get credit).

b. unlimited tactics trainer time/problems.

however, if you do not have a 'clue' on some of them, then maybe you would benefit from Dan Heisman's book,  BACK TO BASICS: Tactics   where many are defined.

additional practice diagrams could be derived from the two books by murray Chandler - How to beat Your Dad at Chess and  Chess Tactics for Kids.

no, I do not get any kickback from endorsing their books.  I teach chess and have found kids who want MORE  will only need minimal directions to point them out to excellent resources.

other books are also quite useful - depending on your time available,  CHESS by Polgar is great for tactical studies without any definitions... just diagrams.
