Tactical training with visualizing pieces and attacked squares

Has anyone here used the concept of trying to visualize not just where the pieces go in some position, but the squares that are attacked? I saw the idea in a Dan Heisman video but haven't seen it mentioned in many other places. e.g. empty board except for R, B, N of same colour, and they shuttle around in some sequence e.g. Rf2 Nb5 Ba1 Rf8 Nc7, which squares are now covered, are the pieces defended? That sort of thing.
