There is a theory advanced by IM David Pruess (I read it on Coach Heisman"s site "danheisman.com") that your brain is only capable of learning 3 new patterns a day. This limits the usefulness of extended tactics trainer sessions. On the other hand, I've read that Susan Polgar still practices tactics an hour a day. Short answer is maybe, but why put all your eggs in one basket? Are tactics the quickest way for an absolute beginner to obtain rudimentary board vision? Most seem to think so, but true intermediate skills are going to require end game skills and opening principles honed by experience, if not at least some theory. Of course Coach Heisman's son got to 1800 USCF without ever cracking a book; just playing a lot and getting out of opening theory as quickly as possible. So who knows?

So if we can only really learn 3 new patterns a day, then we should only do 3 tactical puzzles a day, is that true really?
Not if you get them right.
You should probably read the original interview, somewhere on Coach's website. What I got from it is that if a pattern is completely new to you, not that you missed it because you were careless, but something you've never seen before, you can only stuff 3 of those in your brain a day. More than that, you're just spinning your wheels.
Ah, billions of brain cells, trillions of interconnections and only capable of usefully absorbing three new chess patterns a day. So, there's no need for a Premium account, then.

It is a slightly controversial theory of course, and then some of us seem to enjoy "spinning our wheels".

Is it possible to get at least proficient at chess (intermediate-ish OTB rating) with just using the tactics trainer on here with no other study?
