Ten-Minute Chess

Hello all.  The forums are littered with various discussions of the merits of Blitz and Bullet chess.  I'm more interested in learning about games with a time control of ten minutes, no increment (10/0).  Although such is categorized as blitz chess here, do you think that chess played with 10/0 time controls is long enough to have a decent game?

Yes, i think so.  I dont like chess played in under 5 minutes.  But i dont have an hour each side either.  So i generally play 10 minutes a side.  Then the longest a game can take is 20 minutes.  Its long enough that 4 or 5 times a game, when there are some really important moves, you can spend a minute or 2 thinking about that move.  I think this time limit is a good compromise.

I had a winnable game the other day but lost on time.  So i actually play 8/3 (8 minutes per side, with a +3 second increment so in the end game i get 3 seconds to make moves (at worst).

what do you mean by players magically becoming grandmasters?

I think chess at 10/0 is long enough to have a decent game where you can spend some time on a critical decision (quality chess), and at the same time get through a number of games in a reasonable length of time (quantity) to get some repatition in.

I think 5 minutes games is the least amount of time to have a decent game.
if you know the opening you can play the first 10 moves within 20 seconds and have a lot of time for the rest of the game.

I think the author was making a reference to the "infamy that cannot be mentioned" on here...

Add a 5 or 10 second bonus to whatever speed you are playing.  This affords you an opportunity to get to the end of game "on the board," instead of the clock.

And play at whatever speed you feel gives you reasonable practice and improvement. Why some folks insist on Game in X/0 remains unclear to me.  The faster the time control, the sloppier the game.  Nuff said?

A bonus increment will surely spur improvements in your endgame play.

The problem with the increment is that it's hard to find anyone that will agree to play under those terms.  Trying to line up a match of 10/5 turns into negotiating Reykjavik '72 all over again!

And whew, I dont know about you, but after just one game of 10/0, I'm freakin exhausted.  I just played a game and feel like I need a cigarette, shower, and nap..
