GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD

Avatar of getfunky

Playing is not enough. Tactical puzzles definitely not enough. If you truly want to get better at this cruel incredibly hard game, you need to work with a coach, put yourself under his/her wing. chess is the only game in the world where people think they can improve without a coach. Simply doesn't happen. Every GM had a coach at some point.

Studying tactics is good but will only get you so far.  You should get a book of games by a master - I'd recommend "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings" by Irving Chernev - and play over them.  Another great book from Chernev is "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played." Also, maybe you're playing too much!  Spend more time studying and take some time off from playing games.

If it's not fun, don't play!

btw, Chernev is a great writer; his works are always concise, instructive, and entertaining.

I noticed from your stats that your avg. opponent is about 200 points higher than you.

This is very odd. I've never seen someone with a such a difference. The vast majority of the time peoples opponent avg rating is less.

Although it is good practice to play stronger players regularly, you also need to play weaker players so you can work out new ideas in an environment that offers a better chance of success.

This won't necessarily help you get tons better, but it may cut down on the number of losses and allow you some room to grow.

And, as others have said; read and study more.

The only reason to quit chess is if your not interested. If you dont improve, just keep going! Doesnt matter(much) if you lose alot. If you learn someting, thats great! Dont quit just because u feel u will never improve! Trust me ive almost quit chess since I was terrible.

You're not that bad.  A rating of 1250 and 1400+ tactics is pretty decent.  How long have you been playing?

Avatar of disisadam

Ive been playing for 1 year straight now John

Avatar of johnmusacha

That's still not bad for a year.  It also depends on how old you are.

Are you slowly analyzing your lost games?  With a pen and pad and real chess board?  Do that, then go over your notes with a stronger player, then double check everything later with a computer.

Avatar of disisadam

im 17, and I analyze my games throughout the computer rather than on a real chess board but I guess i can try the real chess board as well. Although for some reason, I seem to play better in real life rather than online I don't know exactly why but I have been able to beat 1500rated+ players in real life maybe because it's easier for me to see what's going on on the actual board.

My coach tells me: don't use computer until 2000 rated fide because it will warp your mind.

I don't think you will quit, if you still like the game.

Avatar of Maddolis

Give it another year and you'll be 1550.
I think it's important to analyze your games. Instead of playing, say, 15-20 games a day and doing 30 minutes of tactics, do 2-5 games a day and analyze each of those games straight after playing (plus 30 mins tactics later on). That way, you might pick up on the types of errors you often make and where you make them (ie opening? middlegame?). Could also be worth upgrading to diamond for a month so that you can use Chess Mentor.

I've been playing 2 years and I'm about at your level. Playing turn-based 3 day games is the most helpful thing right now. I think it is good to be able to shift from one focus to another, then come back later, ie blitz, standard, online, some book, tactics and so on.  Also, weirdly, I play better after watching candidates tournament for an hour, even though I don't understand it at all!

You play fine. There's only one issue.

YOU NEED A BETTER ATTITUDE!!!

Avatar of beardogjones

I agree. You should quit "playing" hours and hours of chess and start "working"  chess.
