The 50 move rule must be abolished!!!

Don't most games end within 50 Moves?

HessianWarrior

En passant seems pretty stupid too; get rid of it.

DrSpudnik

There should be takesies-backsies if you call it.

HessianWarrior

You should also be able to throw the Chess Board into your opponets face if you don't like his move and that makes it a draw.

How many of my drawn games were drawn with the 50 move rule?

Hundreds!

Oh wait...scratch that. It has never happened to me.

Well play 2 hundred thousand games and maybe you will.

The 50 move rule is in place for good reason. I just don't see why you would want to abolish it. Yes, I read the argument. I'm still in favor of the rule. However, how many players actually find themselves facing this situation? There are good reasons for such rules. I for one don't want to die of old age waiting for some action on the chessboard. Here's a thought; everytime you capture an opponent's piece, your opponent has to stand up and do an Irish Jig. Just get rid of the board and pieces and give each player boxing gloves. If you cannot knock your opponent out after 50 punches the fight's declared a draw. Wow, this must be slow night on the forums.

"It almost never happens" is a reason not to bother changing the rule, not a justification for doing so. If it's that rare it's not really much of a problem, is it?

TheGrobe makes a good point. Does the 50 move rule really effect you?

Some of those one-off or rarely needed rules probably arose out of frustration.  It's like those bizarre laws that show up as fillers in newspapers and magazines.  There will be some ordinance written in 1908 in a town with 130 people that forbids a person from walking down a sidewalk carrying more than 5 live pigs upside down by the tail (4 pigs on Sundays), and you just know that when the law was written there must have been a problem and some yutz was saying "Y'all can't stop me, there ain't no law!"  100+ years later the law is still on the books because everyone fears what might happen if it's removed.

True, and further, I would guess that if it were abolished it would begin to affect you, because then people would suddenly have the oppurtunity to play on endlessly in a way that they do not have now.

That, or everyone simply stopped caring about the issue once the problem was resolved. The laws remain on the books simply because they are doing no harm, other than taking up space in the books themselves.

Well as I started to read thru this thread I became quite worried that it might be a waste of time ( hmmmm ) but then I got to the cartoon posted by NJH. Boy was I glad to see that funny item, saved the whole thread for me  lol.

It is a useful rule to make exhaustingly boring games end

It's not that rare. It happens all the time, except that sensible players see the inevitable and agree to a draw without playing out the 50 moves.

FIDE decided to abolish ALL exceptions to the 50 move rule, so go argue with them. I'm sure they will find your reasoning very persuasive (not)...

@OP: I make a point to be as polite as possible to all members on this site, regardless of how offensive they may or may not be (to me or to others). I hope you will bear that in mind as you read my criticism of your viewpoint.

You have completed a grand total of 14 games (Online/Live combined) on this site. You give no indication of how many years' chess experience you have. You presented a poorly organized, poorly-thought-out argument of why the fifty-move rule should be abolished. In light of all this, what makes you think that you are qualified to call for a change in the rules of chess?

That wasn't polite at all, it was bloody inflammatory!
