The Ascension: My Chess Story

Oh that's right. I remember I had to fill mine in. Since I'm not truly rated I used 1300 which is about what I thought it should be based on 20 years of play on ICC.

Interesting. 1300 is quite high. That makes you one of the better players on the site. Congratulations.

Well thanks, but I always thought I should be around 1500. However my TT is over 1900 and it seems that figure rings true, based on some research I did. The TT rating has nothing to do with openings. They are all about mid game and endgame. My opening lines will not stand up to a computer program rated over 1800, but it seems I can hold my own there in tactics and endgame. In another thread everyone is saying the TT is skewed to show a higher rating, but I suspected it simply shows the rating level based on middle and end. The openings are by far the hardest and most tedious to learn, since you have to memorize a ton. This is why players who have lesser opening skills see a far higher rating in TT. Not because it is skewed, but because the player, like myself, lacks the opening skills. I confirmed my suspicion by looking at Nakamura's TT rating vs his play and they are pretty much equal. A player of his caliber has the openings down, so his skill (or lack of) in that area doesn't detract from his true rating. Just my opinion, but it makes sense to me.

What is a TT rating?

Thank you for the wonderful comment.

Great story, Vlad, but I have reservations about two things:

1. "I logged onto Chess.com to play the game I love. The game I had decided to sacrifice my whole life for."

Obsession is rarely a solution to life, in which there are so many things to experience: sports, music, creative writing, the arts, science, etc.  Don't miss out on them!

2. " I am rated an incredible 1248 in Blitz. As I've discussed before, 1200 is the expert's rating."

Over 2400 years ago, when the Oracle of Delphi pronounced Socrates of Athens as the world's wisest man, he sought out wiser people to disprove her.  Finally, Socrates realized she was right because he was the only educated or skilled man who realized how little he knew.

You - and the rest of us - would be wise to learn the lesson Plato intended when he passed this story of his teacher down to us.

I was seriously interested in science from about the age of 5, wanted to become a chemist by the age of 12, and thought I knew 90% of all there was to know about chemistry when I graduated from high school. I began doing research under a professor in my college sophomore year at UMBC, gave a talk on my research at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. in my senior year. I got a graduate degree in Chemistry from IIT, and three years later was chief chemist of process development for a subsidiary of Dow Chemical.

At that point, I was the chemistry equivalent of a grandmaster and I realized I didn't know 10% of all there is to know about chemistry!

Study more about how to play chess and you'll realize that anything under OTB 2000 is NOT an expert's rating.

Absolutely, but I didn't want to break it to him.

yeah i dont see how 1200 is the experts rating its reasonably small and theres a reason why chess.com beginners start at 1200

Wow u should consider writing a book

Is that so?

I assume you are interested in reading more about my Chessing endeavours?

Wow. Truly inspiring. You should consider writing that for the players tribune. All you have to do is convince them that chess is a sport, but once you do that the whole world can know about your glorious journey to 1200.
