The beautiful unsung melodies of chess

I've heard the phrase "the unsung melodies of chess" being used to describe the moves that were not made, the variations that were never played, with the implication that sometimes these "unsung melodies" may be more beautiful than the (perhaps rather prosaic) game that was actually played. At my level, where errors abound, there are plenty of "unsung melodies" that get missed by both players. But are there any particularly good examples of beautiful "unsung melodies" in master-level chess?
