This would be quite long but here goes:

I don't know who's best, I think many are very good, especially all* those mentioned so far. Each brings something unique to the table and it's always refreshing to have variety.

I just wanted to add some that I haven't seen mentioned and I think they deserve to be because they all have their moments. (if they were mentioned, my bad)

First, did I miss something or did nobody mention Tal? If we're voting for best book I think his Life and Games is an easy candidate.

Top authors with a distinct style:

  Peter Wells, Matthew Sadler, Paul Motwani (mainly for originality and crazy brain), Jesper Hall, Yermo (very honest and sometimes funny), Avni (different perspective, he's a Psychologist), Rowson (Philosopher...), Larsen.

 Authors who do a solid job with often refreshing material:

Aagaard, Dunnington, Nigel Davies, Soltis, Jereon Bosch, Mednis, Simon Williams, Mihail Marin, Franco, Van Perlo (ok only one book and not much writing, but the content is great),  Flear, Lemoir.

Authors who do a thorough job analysing and being objective:

Avrukh, Stohl, Palliser, Pedersen,  Schandorff (just one book so far), Vigus, Rizzitano, Dembo, Vigorito, Pinski, Timman.

That's enough for now, I left off many other good authors.

* Maybe except one... ;)

Why nobody wrote something about Dan Heisman?

Very easy to understand, I like his books for beginners.

My vote goes for David Bronstein.  Zurich 1953 has to be one of the best books ever written about chess.  Averbach's Tactics For Advanced Players is another must read, as is My 60 Memorable Games.  But Bronstein gets my vote.

I think Zurich 1953 is a great book, but when I asked the great man to sign it he readily agreed, but was a bit disparaging about the it, he didn't think it was his best.
