The Best Chess Author

David Bronstein and Mikhail Tal.
Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953 by Bronstein and
The life and games of Mikhail Tal by Tal
are the two best books I have read

Jonathan Tisdall's Improve Your Chess Now is a very thought provoking book, perhaps the best statement I've seen of a concrete dynamic approach to analysis. Mikhail Tal was possibly the wittiest writer on chess (although John Watson sneaks in the odd joke here and there). David Bronstein is excellent at explaining key middlegame concepts. Some people complain that Kotov steals his examples from other authors, but I would say that books like Think Like a Grandmaster and the Art of the Middlegame are absolutely essential reading. Both Kasparov and Fischer are very good analysts. On the endgame, I like Paul Keres.
