Bring back 'brah'!
The Carlsen bump: One year later
That's better, now I can relax.
Carlsen has zero effect on me, his brow is like that of a gorilla, I doubt he knows much of brahs.
I am kinda bummed myself, brah.
Kinda like how they said the Strokes and White Stripes were gonna "Save Rock n Roll" in 2001 . . . a few years later we're already back to Tay Swift and Kellie Clarkson, brah.
You do realize that about a year ago the chess forums were ablaze with talk of how chess would become the new hip thing all over the world when Carlsen becomes champion.
Don't deny it, brah.
It happened in 72 as well. The BBC broadcast the Championship matches, and everyone said chess would be a major TV sport (fat chance!) Fact is chess is very much a minority pastime that doesn't interest either sports fans or regular viewers.
After Fischer-Spassky chess clubs were supposed to spring up everywhere, didn't happen, and there were no brahs then brah (except in Hawaii of course).
AT this point, we have to conclude that the anticipated increase in the respectability of chess promised by the Carlsen camp has not materialized in the slightest.
You cannot deny that many a Carlsenite was promising, before Carlsen's eventual crowing as champion, that having Carlsen as champ would directly result in an increase in both the popularity and image of chess.
This is beyond dispute.
How do you feel now that it is clear that Carlsen has had zero effect on the reputation or image of chess?
Then again, at least we have that "Millionaire Chess Experience" in Vegas, baby.
