The Chess Weekly

Yes, over one hundred years ago they were complaining about the lack of brilliancy in master chess, and it still goes on today. It's good to know that some things never change.
Those were some nice games and cute traps. Thanks, BG.

The following pretty game was played in an exhibition match of three games, between E. P. Elliott, the clever Western Chess Champion, and F. J. Marshall, during the latter's visit in Minneapolis. Elliott won the match by the score of two out of three games, and his play in this contest indicates that he would be a valuable addition to the American Cable Team. - "Chess Weekly," May 15, 1909

Thanks, batgirl. I love how the text of the newsprint expresses the same problems chess has with popularity today.
"The Chess Weekly" was a weekly chess periodial published and edited by W.E. Napier, Magnus Smith and Charles Nugent from 1908-1910. It was a rather remarkable publication.
I was pursing a few issues and though I'd share a couple games and traps I came across.
The game are from the Dec. 12, 1908 issue and the traps from the Feb. 6,1909.
