The curious case of 1200: The Expert's rating

Sort:
1-7rd1

I'd like to play you Tanya Harding. I haven't played competitively since Jr. High chess club. And getting much better is a challenge. I only play rapid. I don't count my blitz, because I've used blitz just to try to learn new strategies. Tried learning fried liver, and learned a bit about the Sicilian. Then I try to incorporate them in rapid. Still only around a 1350. So if anyone wants to play hit me up

As Tonya_Harding pointed out, opening databases (such as 365chess) are allowed in Daily chess, but endgame databases (usually called tablebases) are forbidden.

ChessLebaneseSalah

the first real challenge for a beginner is 1300. Then you know the rules, then at around 1800 you become a very good club player, and at 2000+ (otb of course) you start being of expert level. 2200+ you are a master of the game, and youre a at nationally recognized strong level. and 2400+ you are world class level

ChessLebaneseSalah

so basically fide nailed it with the ratings and titles

Do you know any good "tablebase" sites?

The best free online one that I've found supports seven pieces (including both colors, and including the Kings).

KvK – Syzygy endgame tablebases (syzygy-tables.info)

It finds the correct winning path to this position, for example (White to move).

Thanks! are there any databases for mid games?

Never heard of any, but there is that Laszlo Polgar huge (but cheap enough) book with 4158 Middlegame positions to "solve".

A FM at my club gave it away to who would want it, and I grabed it first. he told me tho "I don't recommend it for anyone under 2200", but that's just his opinion.

Ok thanks!

No biggie I get it. It's just hard to take your game to the next level when your stuck. It's like you gotta keep studying. Being self taught is always trial and error.

I don't think you realize what you're asking.

There are way too many possible middle-game positions. Even the seven-piece syzygy tablebase (which only covers the two Kings and up to five other pieces in total, remember) contains over 423 TRILLION (that's trillion, not million or billion) distinct positions. How many positions would a 32-piece middle-game tablebase require? More positions than there are atoms in the universe?

I feel that. I'm fairly new at chess. It makes sense.

Well maybe one could buid a relevant Middlegmae database, around typicall pawn structures.

Or just read "Pawn Power in Chess" by Hans Kmoch.

I suppose this is what blueemu said: "pawn power in Chess" but the French title of it

Thick book indeed!

My copy is from the Late Bronze Age... as you can probably tell from the price.

EDIT: Yeah, mine is the 1973 printing. Nearly 50 years ago.

I think when you get to 1200 you starting to get a grip but are still a baby. I'm 1400 sometimes 1500 & know I'm starting to get good but I'm still a long way off.  I have always been a very slow learner but give me extra time on the case & I be terminating allsorts...... 1600-3000 I'll take their eyeballs out the back of their heads one day... WATCH!!!!

Yeah, just do that. Last time I played a 1350 OTB, I almost lost. It's hard to concentrate for hours with such "non opponent" when they're playing "the game of their life" and you is bored to death.

You just convinced me you are the real Tonya Harding with that reply.  happy.png

a5 stops white from gaining more space on the queenside which would come with tempo on the bishop etc.

Using a database while playing is cheating.

Not in daily.

I see, that just makes it a joke to me.

I suppose it's just not for me then. Just hate the idea that my opponent can go into some deep line that he didn't even think of himself.

Well, I never played correspondence Chess myself, so, I can understand that. But hey, all have got access to the same databases, so...

Right, but the one person actually studied the openings and the other might just be making the moves like a donkey.
