All players need to start out at 500.
The curious case of 1200: The Expert's rating

The 1200 hump, as it is commonly referred to in Chess, is the sport's greatest obstacle.
Achieving this rating is the equivalent of graduating from an Ivy league School. No, it does not yet mean that you have mastered this pastime of intuition and pattern recognition. It does on the other hand suggest that you are well on your way to achieve such accomplishments.
In other words by attaining the rating of 1200, you can claim the title of being a Chess expert, and deservedly so. The mark of 1200 separates the casuals from the serious. It is the dividing line between the average and the exemplary.
I write this today because I want to address Chess.com's peculiar approach to rating new users. Many of you know that upon opening a Chess.com account, one is immediately gifted the rating of 1200. This means that every new user is recognized as an expert. Of course most of these users end up going below the 1200 mark and lose the title almost immediately, after all they are beginners and not used to such high level Chess. Does anybody know why Chess.com has chosen 1200 as a starting point? After all it's not just an arbitrary number.
I had started at 100 elo when I joined. Now I am a 1200

Uh, Expert is a real title, and it's only given to 2000 rated players.

"Expert" is not a title.
Not a title but a rank, the is the rank above class A.
It can be achived with >2000 USCF or FIDE

Congratulations! That's a tremendous improvement. 100 Elo chess and 1200 Elo chess are completely different.
I stay around 1200 in rapid and I suck. And the chess community doesn't even recognize players under 1600, they just call anyone under that class C. So I think you over estimate 1200
Ratings on this site are inflated compared to FIDE, 1600 player on this site would be several hundreds lower rated in FIDE.
I saw two guy rated 2300 and 2400 here at blitz, and one did beat a master otb at a 5 min game and the other lost a very close game at 5 min too.
They both seem to be at a master level....
In blitz, perhaps. There's a difference between beating a master in blitz and being master strength in classical... A big difference.
I have beaten Fide master in blitz. It was an equal endgame and then he blundered his queen in time pressure.
2000 isn't enough for expert anymore then?
Maybe 2000 FIDE, 2000 on this website is nothing. I am rated 2016 rapid on this website as of the moment of writing this comment and it would be laughable to me to call myself a chess expert.

In real life (thirty-five years ago) I was an Expert in the low-2000s, and on Chess.com I'm 2350.

That's about the level where I would consider someone to be a chess expert (2350 on this website) but maybe that's because that's the rating which is a couple of hundreds of points higher than mine. As people say you always think a good chess player is the one which is a couple of hundreds of points higher rated than you.

I do t know about the 1200 hump but one thing that is for sure is 1200 elo is the most debated elo there is so...... let's talk about. I'll start with my own emotional opinion because that's clearly what almost everyone does on these message boards. I'm happen to be rated 1200 pretty consistently I feel I can be higher tho I went from rapid to blitz to bullet 1200 r then moved to 1200 blitz 1050 highest in bullet I believe yeah bullets rough.also I'll add at when 1200 was reached I switch to a new opening dropped and reach 1200 with that opening. The term expert well let's see how I feel. I know several openings as for main line or side lines couldn't tell you witch is witch I know where my pieces should be for the most part. I do not move a piece just to and because you have to move a piece every move there is a motive rather it works or not that's a different story. I understand when to simply moving the king to the center in end games but I still will rarely stalemate. Knights still get me all the time but I understand the king and the piece on the same square can never be taken by the knight if I blunder its because I didn't see it got mate fever. When my king is very and i mean very weak and the enemy's pieces moving in I know and understand my king is week I can't possibly calculate every possible mate I use intuition and feel I can mate first. So it depends on what you defined as expert. Is it knowing and understanding the game or is it results and beating everyone else. I would go knowledge as coaches in boxing mma and football and so on can not throw a ball with and thread a needle cus demato could not beat Tyson in a fight neither could max keller are they not experts.
FACTS
Now this is where fact come in and in my opinion the only thing that matters what you people keep saying and what people keep saying on every message board is out right false just not true not only is it not true but your flat out making things up to fit your narrative witch is out right misleading and in most cases discouraging people come to these for a sense of understanding and validation and go figure you threw blood sweat tears and possibly years on years you reach 1200 just to find everyone confirming your skill level is that of one who pushes pieces to watch them move wow that queen sure can move far and wow the knight sure do move funny like. Facts most people do not reach 1200 in days weeks months even years facts most people know matter how much they try will never be able to reach 1200 so if you are in fact 1200 today or where ever 1200 I congratulate you most will never. And no most will not reach 1200 with esse. 1200 puts you in the top 10 percent of people who play chess 600million people play chess regularly according to chess.com and 1200 is in the top 10 percent. That's one I I. Ten people 10 out of 100 people that's crazy unbelievably rare. Most people can't get passed 800 600 is average according to chess.com I know alot of people that play chess no one wants to play me it's not fun for them they do play I give up queens queens and rooks time odds and still mate under a minute I lose almost every game because I give unlimited take backs. What is 1200 rated very prestigious very rare barley obtainable. Now as for this 2000 and up title players. This my friends is impossible yeah that's right I said impossible. Hikaru said it best the potential for most people is about 1800 and that's potential most will never have you seen a nfl draft number prospect what's his name dude no body knows in the history of chess everyone who has ever reached a title is less then 1 percent of chess players. Like the the rich or front man to a band a LeBron kobe jordan tiger woods Tom Brady lamar Jackson sorry ravens fan here there not experts there gods among men born with something extra gms and other titles memory is insanity. The thing that lead Bobby Fischer to hate the game he loved remember where they go now yes there intuition and skills at pure chess is God like and anyone 2000 or higher any title player we bow down to you we all want to be you we all want it you are it. So people if your 1000 and over especially if your titled be humble we are all in awe of you. So stop making things up say most will reach 1200 with esse it's flat out not true. As for a expect in the book titled the outlier to be labeled as a expert you need 10000 hours of research experience and studies or 10 years to reach this So in conclusion with ten years or 10k hours or as I put it knowledge not result it is more then fair to consider 1200 a expert player. And if you do not agree I feel no human is. Because those coaches and those tethers teaching chess will lose to title players every game and those magnus Hikaru fabi and so one could not draw a computer ever not once with white. To a computer magnus knows .001 percent of chess he knows nothing and those my people are the facts

It also depends on the time control. Being 1000 elo at Rapid or Blitz does not necessarily mean you are that bad in slower time controls. I've defeated players at Daily chess on this site who boast 1900-2000 elo in Rapid or Blitz, and when they have to concentrate for a bit longer, and face an opponent who has more time available per move than just a few seconds, they just can't do it. They just can't think mid/long term nor they can come up with a plan or even think positionally - when they are faced with an opponent in a longer time control, they just flat out fail.
So just because you are 1000 elo or 1500 elo or 2000 elo at bullet or blitz, does not mean you will perform at the same level in a more perfectionist time control ... you might as well be losing to 1200 elos at classical.

Isn’t 800 the new 1200 nowadays on this site?
800 is the average rating last time I saw it.
its like 650 now

most people below 1800 are complete trash, if you have been below 1800 and above 1800 you would know what im talking about.
id say 2000+ is when it actually starts to take real skill to improve. you can no longer fool around with trash openings and you gotta actually take it seriously or you will lose
