The difference between blitz, bullet, and rapid?

Hello!

could someone walk me through the difference between blitz, bullet, and rapid?

And maybe explain how each could benefit the skills of a player? Which should I focus on more? etc

I love the standard and daily play but i never know what to pick within these three categories.

Here's an article with the times for each...

Bullet is for very experienced players to show off their skills.  Lots of kids play it anyway.

Blitz gives a little more time especially with an increment and can be useful for testing new openings, but otherwise is probably best left to experts.

Rapid is what most experts say you should focus on.  15/10 gives you time to think and with the increment, end games can be less frantic.  Of course it's just a game and if you're playing just for fun, play whatever you want.

Rapid = For people who like short movies

Blitz = For people who like YouTube videos

Bullet = For people who like TikTok

Hi! If you are new to the game, I would recommend you to play rapid. Ten minutes is, in my opinion, long enough to think about your moves and make a plan. Try with ten minutes maybe it wont fit you and you find yourself in time troubles, but I dont think that will be the case. Later, when you get better at chess you can always catch up your blitz and bullet rating.

I believe 10|0 here is the most popular time control.

I know for a fact it was a few years ago and believe when the site switched it to rapid, it was mentioned as still being the most popular.

I mean, the other blitz time controls combined might be more popular and since FIDE has 10|0 as blitz, then I guess that would help the pool be the most popular.

Surprisingly this explains a lot!
