The end doesn't justify the means..

Couldn't agree more with this. If you're winning by a significant margin, especially if you're a PIECE ahead (and your opponent has no compensation), then there is really no excuse to lose, and if you do, it's no-ones fault but your own. 

Also you can't outplay someone and lose. If you play better for most of the game but then lose you must have made a huge blunder to throw it away, thus greatly reducing the overall quality of your game.
