The etiquette of resigning

I do think when an opponent resigns one move away from an obvious checkmate, that is poor sportsmanship, as is running out the clock to avoid checkmate. Am I wrong?

The best way to punish fast machines playing, is to never resign - until mate in one. Let the 30 rapid minutes go all the way till the 29th minute, then move out of check - They will stop cheating in no time. Make it boring for the cheaters.

if you have chances of flagging your opponent or regaining chances due to time trouble or their low rating don't resign. If you hung ur queen vs a + rated opponent in blitz or slower and you aren't ahead in time its most likely time to resign.

Forced checkmate, he had to move his king and had nowhere to go except C1, so I pre-moved rook to E1 for the checkmate.

The best coaches always say: " Resigning is a commendable thing to do - as long as it is your opponent that does it!

Especially for beginners and intermediate players, playing on in a lost position can be a valuable learning experience, providing insights into how to convert a winning position and how to defend tenaciously.

Unless you are at a high level and no time pressure play on. Calculate your own doom. Flip the board and see if you can find the mate.

if you are in a lost position please just resign the game... it makes it easier for everyone. Yes, including you...#stalemate

In this game I was down so much material but I managed to force stalemate. NEVER RESIGN!!!! EVEN IF ITS MATE IN 1 v.s. HIKARU.
I know I'm just 1200, but even if ur a fide master. anything is posssible

That's just ridiculous. There are many different types of lost positions. If I am on a losing end of Q+K vs K, I am resigning it every day of the week against any half decent opponent. But if it is N+B+K vs K (which is totally lost too), I am sorry, I will insist on you demonstrating you know how to convert it within 50 moves.

True lol I must insist on none of my opponents resigning alas they all like to resign

I know the real answer to this dabate, its not sexy, but its the right one: it depends.
By the way, the comperisment with football or any other sport where resigning is not an option is useless, as that is not an option. I promise you, if there would be resigning an option in football, there would be plenty of resignations when the score is 8:0 or something.
Also, if there is posiibility to stalemate or runing out of time, the risigning can be seen as bad option, but if you have just a king left aginst my king and queen and I have more than a minute left on my clock, you not resigning are just wasting both of our time.
I resign whenever I feel like it, and for myriad reasons. Sometimes I have pressing matters IRL. Sometimes I just don't feel like playing anymore. Sometimes I think a particular game is boring. Sometimes I resign because randomly because it amuses me, especially if I'm winning with M1, ..., Mn, or up massive amounts of material, just for giggles.
I almost always resign against the London and certain other openings because I just don't want to play those positions. I don't really care about my rating or "getting better at chess." I just play for fun, and when it ceases to be fun, I resign. I'm close to resigning against the Caro-Kann as well, because it's just too boring and so a waste of time.

That's probably true. It seems like a general rule of thumb is when it comes to sports, there is no resigning. It's unsportsmanlike. But when it comes to games, resigning is more common. Maybe because games are "less serious" than sports so resigning is considered acceptable.
