The Max Lange game given above in #43 has the wrong date, venue and an unclear opponent.
Lange presented this "Chevalier Couronné" game in his "Sammlung neuer Schachpartien." He said "gespielt zu Halle" in October 1856. In his book Lange gives several games played against both Herr von Schierstedt and his daughter Jenny. In this game his opponent was Fraulein Jenny von Schierstedt .
Possibly Fischer but his peak was only for a year or so.
Fischer's peak was a lot more than a year. In 1963 he became US champ with a clean sweep , 11-0. Starting in 1965 he began a string of first place wins in major tournaments around the world that lasted until he became champion and withdrew from tournament play after 1973. The Oxford Companion To Chess states that retrograde analysis shows Fischer to have been the strongest player in the world from 1965 on. He withdrew from the interzonals in 1967 and 1970 because of various disputes, but he was squashing the world in tournaments at the time with huge positive scores and could have been champion much earlier if he hadn't been so finicky and demanding.
Who was the greatest chess player of all time?
