Who do you think would be the hardest opponent for Magnus Carlsen to play for the championship? Would Kramnik with his positional skills be a good bet?

All the Indians saying Anand... the evidence disagrees.

I'd say Kramnik or Caruana. And Giri, if he ever wins the candidates...oh well, forget about him.

What about Nakamura?

Or was it Carlsen-Nakamura? I don't really remember...

Howard Staunton for certain.  Although he is too busy these days working on other things.

Kramnik, Giri & Caruana. To be honest it was my shortlist... And maybe Leko;-)

Kramnik is probably the most solid player in the world. There are other players who may be stronger than him at the moment, but he is super difficult to beat. This makes him an ideal match player. I think Kramnik could pose a serious threat to Carlsen due to the differences in their styles (which is quite important in top level play).

In fact Kramnik was tied with Carlsen in the Candidates tournament 2013 and only lost on tiebreaks. So we could have just as easily seen an Anand-Kramnik rematch instead of Anand-Carlsen.

Kramnik is prone to lapses of concentration, resulting in blunders. These have happened many times in his career.

"an ideal match player"

I think Kramnik has one of the worst, if not the worst, results in matches of all World Champions.

Since 2012 Carlsen's score against Kramnik is 3-0 with a bunch of draws in classical and 10-0 with a bunch of draws in all formats.

Maybe you should listen to what Carlsen himself has said on the topic.

He listed Aronian as his most difficult opponent. He also mentioned Giri, Kramnik, and Karjakin, but he considered Aronian to be his most difficult opponent.

I'd like to see a match between Carlsen and Kramnik, or between Carlsen and Giri.

Carlsen's dominance has escalated a lot the last years, in 2016 he won the first seven games against Kramnik before drawing the last one after messing up a winning position.
