...The New Bright Yellow Ultimate Chess Pieces - Thoughts

Well, me too.  I already gifted 2 of those sets and still have 1 myself.

I will also buy 2 or 3 when the new ones arrive.

Agreed if the color of the new sets look similar to the photos in post #1 of this thread it will be a winner for sure with the newer bigger size specifications. I really like the heft and feel of the newer ones released for sale last

Does anyone remember that Excalibur's set was a similar butter yellow color back in the mid-2000s?

Can't say that I do but with the picture you posted. I can see the similarities. Since I bought my UCP v2.0 set. I have seen 2 other chess players at a local chess club I attend. Went and bought the same UCP v2.0 set. I personally like the color of the new set. Some people don't like change and some do. As long as they never go bold ivory white. I could care less what color it is. Ivory White I can't stand.

Pictures don't look too bad. From the title I was expecting "bright Yellow" like a canary or what you might see road crews wearing as safety vests. Don't think I'd care for that colour. Years ago, I had a porcelain set of royal blue and red pieces with the King about 5" high. Got lost in a move years ago, probably when I joined the Air Force. Not for everyone, but the pieces themselves were very unique.

Chesshouse.com captured the hate-or-love color with this pic:

Maybe you fellas can recommend me a simple standard set for correspondence chess? looking online overwhelmed me with many sizes, weights and such options,
it need to be of decent quality and pleasant on the eyes because I intend to set it on a dedicated pedestal in my office.

The answer to that ask will be highly subjective, @Sillver1.

You're better off to search through forums about the closest sets that have caught your eye and look at the pictures posted by the members here, read the comments and ask what has not been asked.

good point. probably best would be to walk into a brick and mortar store. thank you

What's that?

Kidding aside, good luck. Not that many of those around especially for chess equipment at least for where I am. The Internet is my friend for all things chess in 2019.

One more thing to expect: you won't be satisfied with just one chess set.

Sillver1

Guess I'm lucky there's one on baker st.

Perfect! You have a toy store where you are. Their street-level Google map of the store showed that they sold plastic and wooden chess pieces as well as multiple boards. I'm sure that you'll find something that you'll like.

ADDENDUM: When you shop, make sure that you actually handle the pieces to get a feel of their heft and how they slide across the board, and how they feel when capturing pieces. Also simulate a calculation and stare at the board with the pieces all over the place. You know that you'll be doing that most of the time for analysis, so you might as well get the set that you like to look at for an extended period of time.

The store clerk should understand this... unless they like dealing with returns and exchanges.

I prefer wood over metal. I know that chesshouse sells a wooden version but I don't like their price point on the set with case.

I bought 2 of the yellow Ultimate chess set reissues.  Think I used them for a week and haven't touched them since.  The piece quality is amazing but the color looks like garbage so I don't like to leave them out.  Which is what everyone told Shelby when he sent a picture of the color samples from the factory.  He decided not to listen which is why he's still sitting on half of his inventory a year later.  Would recommend looking elsewhere for plastic pieces.

Mike,

I appreciate the mention on the quality of the sets, but when you say "everyone" complained about the color of the sets you are being a little misleading.  You are only seeing the people who complained, not the people who like the sets.  The people who complained wanted me to make the sets in white and black, which will never happen.  That will make the sets just like the ones everyone else sells.  They will not stick out.

What will be happening is they will go back to the original color.

As for me "not listening", I would have to disagree with that too.  When you get a product done with a new factory, you pay in full before they start the product.  Remember we are dealing with overseas factories.  Nothing could be done after I saw the color, the pieces had already been produced.  What I can do is deal with the situation, get through the original batch, and get them corrected in the new batch.

I have to get through another 300 sets before I can re-order.

300 to go... and the wait continues

You know what is really funny about this?

Few years from now people will be calling this yellow sets "rare". If it is true that this is 1 run only and will never order this color again.

So, as a collectible it will increase in value after you done selling them, because there will not be more of them.

And the more people keep posting about them the more collectible they become...

I probably should get me 1 just to brag about it 5 years down the road.

Shelby, at that price they are sure to move. Twenty bucks makes it very competitive with with any other well weighted set. I have the old blue and yellow (Polgar Version) of the Ultimate set. Well, actually my teenage son does nowadays.
I have five plastic sets and a three wooden ones.
I may purchase this set at twenty bucks but it may just stay in a drawer because I really like the plastic tournament and club sets I have.
Anyway, I wanted to tell you that video you made for YouTube, where you sawed the rook in half was really quite impressive. That is a massive slug weight in those pieces!

If any of you haven’t seen that video, take time to  check it out!  It will convince you that twenty dollars is a good deal for these pieces.
ultimate pieces sawed in half!

All right all of you Ultimate chess set aficionados!  I need to get rid of the last 600 of this in yellow before I can re-order in the correct color.  If you really want these in a different color, here is your chance.  I burn through these and I re-order and it will take 10 weeks to get the new color in.

Anyone who can take them in bulk, I will cut you a HUGE deal.  I have them for $20/unit right now on the site.

With my luck...I switch the color and people start lamenting about the yellow...lol!  If you really want it in the old color...here is your chance!  Those of you who help me most will be first in line when I make them in metal.  Yes, I did say I will be making these in Metal!

Shelby -

Just to make sure there is not further confusion -

Is the plan for the new batch to be in metal ONLY?  What about plastic? Or both?

Thank you.

Eyechess

I can answer that.

The new version will be in plastic, the same color as the original Ultimate set in plastic.

The metal version will be produced separately.

I already have a standing order with Shelby for both versions when they come out.

RussBell

Thank you Eyechess.

RussBell

I just got off the phone with Shelby...

The plan is for the up coming production of Ultimate Chess Set to be produced in BOTH a PLASTIC set and, IN ADDITION, to also produce a METAL set.  For the plastic set the plan is to produce the light pieces in two colors - that is, in the same as, or not too different from the "original" color, as well as pieces that are actually "White".  So two different colors for the light pieces (but NOT yellow!).  Also noteworthy is that for the forthcoming plastic set, the weights will be glued-in so that the loose weights problem that some people had experienced with the previous edition is (hopefully) eliminated.

As far as the metal set is concerned, he is still undecided on the details of the production of the light colored pieces from the perspective of the color vs the metal work, etc. - i.e., the production details are unclear at the moment, so be patient until he gets these issues worked out.

Finally,I did not ask, nor did he give me any indication as to when these sets, plastic or metal, will be available.

Here is the set of the "original" Ultimate Chess Set.  Image taken from Shelby's website AmChessEq.com......based on all the feedback I've seen on these forums (I've read it all) I believe 99% of customers would be happy with the colors of this set....

Thank you.

From my understanding is that he plans on doing the OG cream and black along with ivory and black for the plastic sets. He also has plans on having the Ultimate Chess Pieces set to be offered in metal. The metal offering doesn't excite me. Wooden would be a better offering than metal in my opinion.
