The Number 794

Real chess players will instantly know how the number 794 is related to chess.

Martin_Stahl

If it's what I'm thinking, most chess players probably haven't thought about it or aren't as mathematically inclined as others.

Oh, so your FIDE rating isn't even close to 794?

Bilbo21

I know why.

It's because there are 32 pieces on a board and 64 squares, if you multiply them together then divide by the number of different pieces (6), then multiply by 2 (the number of players), then add 112 (the maximum age you are good at chess, then subtract 2/3rds (on average the number of games you will win or draw) it gets to 794.

So none of you have ever been to the library ?

Is it the number in the Dewey Decimal System for chess, or something like that?

Rsava

What is this "library" you speak of?

zembrianator

People don't read these days.

It's the average number of times a chess player flogs the bishop in a public library each year. As published in the 2015 survey done for Chess Life Magazine.

Yes, all chess books in the dewey decimal system start with 794. It's the first place I go when I visit the library.

Rsava

794 is "Indoor games of skill", so all chess books are 794 but not all 794 books are about chess.

Martin_Stahl

Ah. I have looked at the book at the local library but I normally just buy the ones I am interested in.

Lorgen

That question was completely unfair. "Real" chess players don't look for material in a library.

But some people play chess outdoors ...

Where do "real" chess players look for material then?

When I was a kid, sure. We had to look things up for school though, not for chess.

Maybe you can say real chess players over 50 years old might remember this number.

You mean librarian, not chess player.
