The greatest generation fought and won a world war on two separate fronts, then go on to forged the US into an economic, technological, and military superpower it is today.

Oh jeez, not this shit again. WWII was won by the Soviets! Just look at the scale of the war on the eastern front while the USA was dicking around preparing D-day. A quick glance a the casualties statistics tells the story. Over 26 million Soviets died during WWII. Only 418,000 Americans died.
Americans became a superpower only because they were the only ones whose infrastructure wasn't bombed to hell and back. It had nothing to do with the generation being better than anyone, just the good luck not to be Hitler's neighbor.
