Interesting thought, maybe you're right, but this problem is also prevalent on sites like the ICC where this is not an issue. I think people are just too disgusted with the game to even resign. Maybe they're just jerks, although I don't like to think about people like that.
The real reason for so many abandoned live chess games

Well they're not all jerks and some % of the time it's happening by accident because I am always courteous and resign as soon as I give up or feel I'm in a lost position and continuing is a waste of everyone's time.
I only get tripped up when playing on the phone.
If I could go to the settings and disable the confirmation dialog that appears when I choose to resign, that would eliminate the problem for me (and I have to assume for many others).

- a lot of jerks
No doubt. But I think my suggestion would improve things to some extent. Some > 0% of the time, which is better than nothing.

ne reason is that with Cess.com you can play at yor leisure over 3 days
One word: B L I T Z

Instead of ripping ppls ratings off by lowering it due to disconnection, why not just do the right thing and save the game for later so ppl can play it out and not get penalized for a malfunction ppl can't help. Second when I cancel the search for opponents because it's taking too long to find someone to play it should cancel. Because it took 15 mins to find one person to play. I then cancel the search, get up to make a phone call, and come back and find out that CHESS.COM said I abandon a game when I wasn't even in the room. It's ridiculous, I'm seriously thinking of canceling this account and finding a better site that doesn't rip their customers off. If this is how it is on the free version why would I pay for the full version just to be ripped off more?
I suspect the reason there are so many people seeming to 'run away on the clock' when losing in live chess is because they are playing on a mobile device and resign and look away and don't see the confirmation dialog, and leave it hanging.
Happens to me when I play on the iPhone, since I usually play on my desktop machine where resignation is instant and final without confirmation.
After resigning a game on my iPhone, I come back to the phone later to see it stuck on the message "Are you sure you want to resign?"
I believe the app should at least give us the option to be able to resign without prompting. I bet that would cut the number of times people leave others hanging in live chess a lot. Seems like since the player is the only one affected if they choose not to have resignation confirmed if they screw up, they should be allow the configuration option.
