How old are you ? Just wondering.
Hope you are just joking; but if you are even slightly serious, then you need psychiatric help. Remember, life is full of ups and downs. Live today so you can succeed tomorrow.

I have to agree with mgx. If you are even slightly serious, you might need some help. You dont play chess for social respect, and social respect certainly does not come from playing chess. Think about it for just three or four seconds. Do you know of anyone that respects you for playing chess? I know I play for fun, and only fun. There is no respect. For me and those I play with, it's social entertainment, not social respect.

I am not joking sir. Everyone thinks I am crazy, I am just a genius. Please stop judging my ideas and fully reflect about them. I would like to give my age out so you can regain hope in humanity by seeing how prodigious I am but that would endanger me and my online persona. An example, why do people want a Mercedes Benz when they already have a crappy Corolla? They already have a car that brings me from point A to point B but they do not have the social superiority that comes from a Mercedes Benz.

Who would you have more respect for? A kid that watches cartoons all day or a kid that plays chess and is better than you at it? We all know the answer, there is no point in lying. The kid that plays chess is the superior being out of the two. Maybe they have objectively the same value, but in this society that is not the case. The kid that plays chess is perceived as a smarter being and so has more social respect which triggers a domino effect. More social respect means a higher place in the social ladder which in turns gives the kid more self-esteem which is necessary to be successful in life.
I think its not a extension but smaller version of life.
You are right sir. There is no breeding but there is still superiority so it makes up for a somewhat version of life. Greetings and best wishes from the Everest!
I would much rather play a really tough, evenly matched game against someone rather than simply crush them. The latter would be not very satisfying at all. Of course it is more satisfying to fight really hard and end up the winner, but it's not satisfying at all to beat someone who is much weaker or simply having an off day.

You have a right to your ideas and others have a right to judge them. If everyone thinks you're crazy and you're the only one who thinks you're a genius, I'd bet on the former.
Chess is just a hobby... After, work, school, family affairs. You are correct, achievement in chess does not get us rights to property, territory, breeding, etc. Bragging rights is limited among chess players only. For those reasons, one should not take chess more than a hobby. Chess is not life and it is a bad profession.
Interesting...
Your philosophy makes sense, but wouldn't that mean the only reward humans receive is that heightened ego/self-esteem through playing chess? Could you say most things people are passionate about could yield the same results in terms of social superiority?
If the opinions of those you love have no respect for chess or for attainment of chess excellence and chess rating, then you will be disappointed.
But why is chess so obsessed with rating people in the first place? I used to play simulation games, for example, which are like chess in that an active community is formed around them, and in that context there were no individual player ratings, just pure enjoyment of the games. It's a pity chess can't be the same.

In our performance-oriented society this is exactly how it is. Your value as human being is measured by your doing rather your being. It is a sure sign of spiritual poverty.
I play chess because i like the intellectual stimulation it gives me, but also fun and excitement, at least when i beat a worthy opponent. And i cant deny that my ego likes getting confirmations for good performance.
Chess is of course a way to get social recognition, however, it is one of the least effective I know. It will most likely not help you propagate your gens to the next generation, so from a biological point of view playing chess is a waste of glucose for the majority of us. There are much more efficient ways of finding a couple to reproduce, including money or physical attractiveness. It is only desperate people who lack those two who should try playing chess for social recognition, just in case they find another nerd in search of love. However, even if the chess player manages to mate, the products of such "event" will be even weaker nerds who will not be able to reproduce even by resorting to the cheapest strategies. So playing chess will only get your gens one generation forward, but no further.
@BronsteinPawn you are just pathetic and it's obvious that you are just here to post complete BS on the forums. Buddhist who really follow the teachings of gautama buddha don't play board games like the game of chess. you are just fake af and you know nothing about buddhism at all. Just compare what you have wrote with buddhism and everybody will see that your post is freaking BS.
You are full of crap, you wrote in your previous topic that you have a wife and children. Now your a buddhist monk too?
Give me a break man, you are just pathetic.
If everyone would take a look on your profile and all the threads you created they will see how stupid you are.
Life is all about social respect. Take a look at wildlife. You attack your brother and whoever wins gets social respect. Get enough social respect and you will have kids with the hot lioness sitting over there.
Chess is no different. Rating is just an extension of your ego, of your social respect. Imagine living alone by yourself. Just having a computer to play with. Chess would be crap since there is no one you can feel superior to because of your rating. Every single action humans do has to do with social respect, with being superior. It even happens to best of us like me, a Tibetan monk.
We play chess because of social respect. The only weird thing is this game does not come with breeding rights so we are all wasting our time to be honest. I do not spend 2 hours a day practicing forks just for fun. I spend those 2 hours so at the end of the day I can crush a fellow human being at the board, feel superior and have some sort of self-esteem.
Lets have a discussion about rating, ego and social respect. What is your opinion about my theory?
