JGambit: I remember when I finally hit 1600 strength...I think I was stuck there for about 4 years. lol I had tried everything and nothing would work.

I have a chess blog about how to get past that level that you should check out.

Studying your blog is not going to get anyone past that level.

^ that guy tried it; didn't work.

very cool I will definitely check out your blog. I did drop back down a bit so I still have work to do before I am holding my 1600.

I think I had peaked at 1500 by I do not feel peaked anymore there is just so many issues in my game and so many different openings that I am not farmiliar with,

One take away I have is that personal qualities are hugely important in chess at every level.

JGambit

It is not out of reach.

1632 now been hanging above the 1600's for a good moment now.

I am happy where my rating is because it is now diffult to find people for longer games conductive to learning (at least 45  10) that are my strength. Im not saying its impossible but you certainly do not get paired instantly like around lower levels.

this means that my rating is now largely enhanced by beating 1500's and 1400's moving up at 4 to 6 points each win. and while I suppose this does reflect consistancy I do not know if it is really representing an increase in understanding of the game. My point is I am quite happy with my rating and no longer focused on that aspect as a measure of improvement.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

If a premium member would tell me my percentile for live standard I would appreciate it.

The road to 1600 is less travelled....and we know this. But, w/ 12 hours per day for tactics study and stuff like that ?....u'll make it my love - u'll make it. So, drill baby drill.

I just didn't drop any pieces, and I learned respect for pawns!

The_Ghostess_Lola

And a little more respect for those playing under 1600 would be more becoming of you....b2.

AKAL1

You need respect for pawns...just saying

The_Ghostess_Lola

How soon one forgets that they were once under 1600.

AKAL1

Never mind just saw it

bangalore2

I am serious you know....

bangalore2

What does b2 mean, though?

AKAL1

b2 = bangalore2

bangalore2

Oh, right....

JGambit

I did make it Lola, and I have actually hit 1650 as well.

I think a big key is being able to finish games that you should win a bit more consistantly. I am constantly looking for the kill shot when I am in winning positions now, you cannot just plod through the game hoping it wins itself.

The_Ghostess_Lola

That's what I do....Embarassed....

It is now quite a bit easier to hit 1600, The addition of points into the pool means that a 1600 became an 1800 right away.

they also gave +200 for over 1700 and so on up the ladder with titled getting +500 to their standard rating. This influx of points into the pool means that this 1600 mark means very little as of the current date compared to before.

This is fine a good thing as the ratings used to be quite deflated for a number of reasons.

To give a comparision I have seen IM Danny Rensch in the 1700's live standard before the increase. He is currently 2242. This means that if we had played when I was at my previous peak rating of 1676 and he was at his 17xx I would have only recived around 9 points if by some miracle I won. Compare that to now where It would be around 15 points for the win.

The old statistically expected results will still be relevant and thus I think that unless you are titled you can probably expect expect points to be flowing a bit more freely for a while.

People that come back from a large hiatus will also like the results of their next 50 games or so as they will rapidly climb to their new normal rating.

This is a good example of why ratings are only relevant when also used with a percentile.

TLDR; 1600 is not as tough anymore to get. I wanted to update this thread to be more accurate it in light of the influx of points
