Rewrite that stuff.

First, this article wasn't about various mates, it was about beautiful games ending in smothered mate.  Second, the article was written in 1912. I didn't write it (something quite obvious to anyone who took the time to read it -or even my subsequent reply- before making ignorant, self-important comments), I only spent 4 or 5 hours transcribing it and digitizing the games for the benefit of the forum readers.   

But I'm sure this too will soar over your head.

Two different definitions. Please take a look at Chess Fox.Another definition. A real pure smothered ending. Only diagram 8 and 9 of post 1.

Smothered endings, no semi endings,no fake endings. 

Sure. There is a pure smothered mate but that doesn't negate others.  You calling them "fake' doesn't make them fake.  There is also a "pure mate" but that doesn't negate other mates.

Apparently Edward Winter agrees that not all the King's escape squares must be occupied by his own men before a Knight gives the coup de grace for it to be considered a Smothered Mate.

In his little page on smothered mates, he has examples similar to the example in post #36

Not sure what the point of arguing about it is.

I've always believed that arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics... even if you win, you're still retarded.
