The speed on these young chess players!

Simply unbelievable!

I was watching on and off yesterday these speed matchups. How Aronian (a young man in his 30s) had no answer to 16-year-old Firouja in Bullet and barely held on to one draw to save himself the tiebreaks. How Grischuk (still under 40), a former blitz WC famous for playing with absolute clarity complex positions with five seconds on the clock and some increment - how he's shut out by a 20-year-old Artemiev.

You watch this and you ask yourself - what? Is that really age? These guys aren't old or anything. What's going on here?

I will be 48 in January and of course, I'm no Grischuk and no Artemiev myself... just a reasonably good amateur - but still, give me a one-minute time control with no increment at the chess club (OTB), pit a similarly-skilled twenty something against me - and I generally have the upper hand. I will be more concentrated, my moves will be more reasonable, I will not go into panic mode and simply keep playing reasonable chess.

My reflexes are still in very good shape - talk about catch that pawn that falls off the table before it reaches the floor... stuff like that - reaction time, reacting fast and to the point. Personally I don't see age as a factor - at least not so far...

But here at chess.com it's a different story. I stopped playing here about a year or two ago, and went instead to play in [competing website. It's against site policy to mention their name - Mod*]

Recently I was thinking - "wait. I know that they're constantly improving their interface. Why not give it another try?"

So I played a bunch of games and really didn't notice any of the lag that used to plague me in the early days of V3 (I enjoy playing 3 0. I don't really like increment in blitz... for me it kind of kills the fun. I like playing badly and flagging people, in other words - and on the winning side, getting that checkmate despite the low time on the clock).

But in my last game it was so frustrating - so I went back to [I will not warn you again, Solskytz! - Mod*].

My opponent and I both got under ten seconds - and then every move, I would HEAR the "click" of my opponent moving and my time would start running - but the move actually APPEARED on the board some 0.7 seconds later. You can guess it - I lost on time and it hardly felt fair! And I was just about to cross 2100 again if I won.

I don't really appreciate it - and will try playing again on this server around March or April 2020 maybe (I use a fast Internet connection, an excellent phone and absolutely no issues when playing in [well stop it already, will you? - Mod*]).

Wait - do I really have to post that second comment for this post to show on the "most recent" panel, attract other people to comment and boost my post up to the celestial halls of glory?

I suppose you're right...

I've said the l-word before and nothing happened to me. Huh

lol. Fine - so I'll stop using that beaten joke, I guess...

dpnorman

Is it telling if I say I believed until just now that it wasn't a joke and that had been done by mods on this site? tongue.png

Suppose it is... even though I thought I explained it well on the last line...

That's quite a long piece of music... the closest I ever came to it was the Goldberg Variations (check that out on my channel). Still a good hour or so.

JohnnyCobra1

A man who plays the piano has all the luck with the women.

JohnnyCobra1

I will check out the Goldberg

#19 I hope you will enjoy it, and #18 - absolutely!

(but it has nothing to do with luck...)

does my 2732 bullet peak count as a 'fast young chess player' or do I need to study harder to catch those guys (or both)
