There are more chess positions than there are atoms in the universe.

Indeed, chess are Universe and the pieces are Galaxies.

Come on, no one even knows how big the universe is! (Astronomers are yet to find the edge of our universe). So basically, you have no idea how many atoms are there in the universe in the first place. So, comparing the number of atoms (which is an unknown quantity) with the number of chess positions is a little absurd.

Don't know who made this statement, but I'm sure he wasn't an astronomer.

I believe that it is impossible to get a stative number of atoms. In fact, the universe right at the Big Bang was around 10kg heavy and most likely had less atoms but the energy somehow transform into waves because they are both at the same time and I don't even know...

There are so many chess positions [countless] but there are more atoms in the universe

As per a dedicated thread on this forum
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/on-the-number-of-chess-positions
the number of possible chess positions is: 8.7 10^45
8726713169886222032347729969256422370854716254

Approximately 8% of these are now believed to be legal.
Far less are sensible.
Far less are relevant.

There are 10^80 atoms in the known universe.

So there are much much more atoms in the universe than possible chess positions.

I don't believe it. Chess positions ARE COUNTABLE, but the universe is ALMOST endless: If there is only 1 universe, there are about 200 BILLION galaxies! Plus, all the air and even vacuum of space are all made up of atoms. If there are multiverses/parallel universes, then it IS endless!

Yeah just the KNOWN universe, and beyond that, there should be more.

I think it is countable

Bonjour pourquoi les parties de maîtres se terminent par « cette position n’existe pas dans la base de donnée » ? Merci
