there is not one board but TWO!

From the profile of IM Norowitz it reads,

Essential to my approach is the concept that there are in fact not 1 board but TWO boards. 2 boards, 2 struggles, going on side by side. Light..and Dark.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what the IM Norowitz means perhaps with an illustration?

I think there's only one person in the world who can explain it. Ask him.

I think he is refering to the Light Squares and the Dark squares on a chess board.

The struggle that exist would be the fighting for control over them.

In some openings 1 side is slightly favored in 1 color than other.

For example In like the Macrozy Bind white usually fight for the control of the Light Squares. Usually the main focus is the d5 light square. Where as black is fighting for the control of the Dark Squares.

The struggle that exist is between to the 2 players playing. An I believe his 2 board's is just a metaphor to demonstrate their are 2 different view points one of your opponent and one of yours.

yes that would make sense although I suspect the two boards not to be a metaphor but to represent the different colour complexes

Thanks for sharing, I've been holding this idea in my mind while playing, and somehow it is helping. I like the idea of building an artificial mini-bishop to replace the one exchanged of (he discusses in his video).

Which video Laurence? I still dont undertsand what he means, its too cryptic.

RoobieRoo

It might have something to do with this, here he describes a pawn chain as being like a mini bishop I think. Although there seems to be some secrecy about it.

Yaacov is my new chess hero, he plays all kinds of stuff you are not supposed to play, stonewall etc

hmmm in the video he hints that there is the light squared board and the dark squared board and sometimes one of these can have more 'value', than the other.  He is really quite an awesome and humble guy.

Hi Robbie, I only just saw your comment. The video I meant is this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKHFUpL9EHw which is embedded on his blog page https://www.chess.com/blog/Yaacovn/im-yaacov-norowitz-teaches-harmony-in-chess-part-1 - I'm going to watch the other video you mention.

The thing is, bearing in mind his words, though I didn't understand them properly, I started seeing my games differently. Then I read up about Bangiev Square Theory, which is also a little esoteric, perhaps, though less so, and it had a similar effect. I felt a deeper understanding, and my rating went up 150-200 points. Then I lost the insight and my rating fell back. It seems to need constant, extra effort.

Thanks Laurence, thanks so much, looks very promising, perhaps it will shed some insight!
