Things that make me sad while playing chess

I'll start.

1. People not saying "gg" at the end of the game. Even if one of us (or both) played horribly (yes, this is a white lie; but I think "gg" has transcended the status of an actual comment and has become a standard closing statement).

2. Playing friends in real life, who open with, 1.a4,e5 2.Ra3,....

try 1. a4, e5 2. a5, d5 3.h4.....

I nearly cried.

@AnthonyCG, I don't share your sadness with points 2 and 5, but certainly with point 3. However, point 6 made me weep. Cry

Hanging pieces and losing.

If I blunder by not seeing an opportunity, it makes me angry. If my opponent blunders and loses material, I'm saddened because it's not the type of win I'm after.

On reflection, it may be silly...big mistake..a few small mistake by my opponent...who cares?

1. Sore losers a.k.a losers.

2. 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3

3. People that think chess makes them smarter than others...

4. People that play just to win a.k.a. sore losers a.k.a....

5. 1.e4 Nf6 2.d3 Oh come on!!!!

6. There are no pancakes in chess.

@ 2 and 5 lol Laughing

At the club as white I like to play a good ol' swashbuckling 4 pawns... but every now and then I throw in 2.Nc3 simply hoping for that very reaction Wink

not sure if it counts, but threads about people complaining that their apponent won't resign and forces them to continue a game, which i would think they enjoy playing.

also two types of chess puzzles.

1.  i find a mate in 3 and the right answer is mate in 2.

2.  when the opponent of the puzzle is such a passivist that they will not take your hanging queen.  if i thought that the guy wouldn't take my hanging queen i may have considered putting her there. (ok, so this is just because i am not very good, i admit that).

i am rarely sad about anything in a game.

what would you like to hear instead of gg or do you want him to mean what he types instead of a formality

While a4 and h4 are  unsound the surprise factor if you're not prepared for them can be of some value. Even Karpov played it and one and even though none of us are near his level, you can't always underestimate surprise even if it's an unsound opening.

Also, a4 ra3 is a delayed variation lenny boungloud opening (1. a4, ra3, e4, ke2).

A World Champion who plays the Slav, gone are the glorious days of the Kings Indian.

the kings indian is no longer considered sound at the very top level.  White's queenside attack comes faster than black's kingside attack, and white can just sacrifice a little bit of material back and have a won endgame.  And also, white can just ruin all black's fun with 3. g3

...... Amazing...KID is busted. Somebody better tell all of those GMs and IMs that are still playing it... ....... birdboy1 wrote: the kings indian is no longer considered sound at the very top level.  White's queenside attack comes faster than black's kingside attack, and white can just sacrifice a little bit of material back and have a won endgame.  And also, white can just ruin all black's fun with 3. g3

I dont think so, it is simply Super GM's want to get invited to top big money tournaments and they are based on rating, not the ability to dazzle and amaze us with fighting chess, hence the rise of the Petroff, and Slav.

Draw as black win as white is the way, Carlsen might sort this out, he is still prepared to play the KID.

As ever money is at the root of this.

dude, it's not necessary to be so argumentative and sarcastic.  Sceadungen wrote a perfectly well reasoned reply that is less likely to make him sound like a jerk.  And by the way, I wasn't talking about 2500 as top level, I was talking about 2750+

Knowing that I am only a rook and can never become a king

I hate when people say gg after the game. I always reply bad game. I play for a win only, consider me sore loser,

On the other hand, I look forward to a very exciting game when a friend's first move is 1.Be3.

I think that's the not-to-be-said-aloud one we were all avoiding.
