They blundered the match just before that by hanging the Rook. Then blocking with the Bishop instead of the other Rook left very little chance of recovery. I think it's quite common at your rating for players just to choose the first move they see to deal with an unexpected Check. This is often part of a chain of careless moves which result in losing the match. It takes some discipline to spend as much time considering your opponent's attacks for as long as you do on your own attacks.
