Sure, even I could visualize that -- but the problem for me (and other non-GM players like 2000-2200 players you're asking about) is that we couldn't do it in a real game because we get distracted by a lot of alternative moves and as a result our calculations aren't the same quality. It's no so much impressive that Anand saw 10 moves ahead, what's impressive is the quality of variations he sees and the accuracy of his evaluations after such a feat.
This does not make sense!
No, I wouldn't be able to do that. Like I said in my post -- in a game situation this is impossible for players like me to do. But if you called out the moves, I would be able to see move 30 clearly (given enough time).
My point in the previous post, and here, is that just because you can visualize 30 moves, doesn't mean you can calculate 30 meaningful moves ahead. Visualization is just imagining a new position after some moves... any position, any moves. Calculation is weeding out good moves from the many bad ones, and not only seeing a position clearly at the end, but rendering an accurate evaluation! Visualization is not hard, while calculation is very difficult.
So the 2200 that can play a blindfold game can indeed see (visualize) 30+ moves but cannot see (calculate) the same variations Anand can.
So Anand's strength here was not that he saw (visualized) a 10 move variation but that he saw (calculated) a very high quality variation.
To my surprise I was able to visualize it to the move 32 when I knew where each piece would go!
First four tries I forgot to observe what new lines are open, so in about 15 minutes I actually could see the position clearly. holy shit. and I can`t play blindfold! Does not make any sense!
Interesting.. first I tried to go to move 32 from 19th without stop, then I just lost track. Then I started over again from 19th and again last track at around move 26. Then I started instead of going back to 19th move -to 23 (in my head of course!), and so on, then I could actually see on move 32! I did`t know I am able to see that far! I worked very hard on chess understanding for the last year and all of a sudden I can see over 10 moves deep in such complicated position. wow.
That`s why Kasparov said "It does not matter how far you can see if you don`t understand what you are looking at".
So.. calculating like Anand can`t be too difficult, I mean come on he used around 45 minutes to calculate on move 19.
Thx for motivation, Honda!
"The real talent is shown here in that once he saw the move 24 ...Be4, he continued calculating and saw that Nc4-d6 was immune from capture.." - When he sow Qd4 he noticed that if no B guarding g7 it*s mate(minimum chess imagination), then he sow back rank is weak(assessment) and plenty of inadequately defended pieces(pieces not protected by pawns. In fact all the pieces are inadequtelt protected). No big deal
>Come on, almost mate, back rank weak, inadequately protected piece already a reason for some tactics to be flying aroundm then just pay close attention to change in position after reach move.
Another amazing thing is that Anand sow a half move further/one candidate more in the line with Qe6 instead of Be6. If Carlsen sow it (Rd1) he would*ve looked for something else. Kasparov says its cos Carlsen does not work enough on his chess.
to me, there are THREE skills involved -- we have to calculate, visualize, and evaluate.
1) Calculate all of the moves (find all candidates, all responses, our responses to those moves, etc);
2) Visualize all of those variations and sub-variations; and
3) Accurately evalute them (tactically, strategically, time, material, king safety, pawn structure, good pieces, bad pieces, dynamic potential, threats, etc etc etc)
And do each of these at every turn!
In the game Anand says that he sow 3-4 forced with few candidates variations to move 32 before making move 20.c4 That is a very strong ability to see not only deep but wide. What crossed my mind is that many expert players unlike me(2000-2200 elo) are able to play blindfold, that means they are able to see AT LEAST 30 moves deep. So does it mean some expert would be able to see what Anand sow there?
