Wow you got the stamp of approval.  Be proud

TheGrobe

Relevant, sure, but a still a little irreverent.

Soooo... what's it mean when this post was originally generated by someone unwilling to help pay for this site by subscribing, but cares how many members it has.. ??

TheGrobe

You're the doctor, you tell us.

cabadenwurt

Thanks for all of the recent posts, some interesting stuff there.

Dr.Bjamin: You may not have checked out the first post in this thread because this thread was set up as a counter-balance to a thread from a fellow who did not agree with the numbers listed at this site. The other thread has now been locked up and will stay frozen in time I guess  lol.

A lot of us didn't find it amusing when they first implemented the "pictures in off-topic forums only" rule, but we have adapted.

Especially when it was done seemingly overnight. I must admit, I was considered an abuser (by staff). However, c.c has adapted, also. Pics are allowed if they are relevant to the discussion.

Many of the users are either inactive or cloned accounts.

With six million users you would see far more players online.

But no one said there were 6 million active users, it is members.

If one person has multiple accounts they are still only one member.

To be honest they should say chess dot com has nearly 6 million accounts.

sapientdust

If they really wanted to be honest, they'd pick a better metric than the number of accounts, or at least also show another one in addition to number of accounts. Something like the number of accounts that have been used at least twice in the last month ("Active Members") would give a much more accurate view of how many significant members there are.

chess.com trumpeting the number of accounts is like a website loudly announcing that it has 1 million viewers when it has something like 10,000 distinct viewers per month -- but over the course of 10 years, they've had 1 million distinct viewers (even though most saw 1 page coming from a google search and never returned, and most haven't visited the site for many years).

DrBjamin must be a real doctor cos he's got a white coat on...but what's with the sex toy in he background? ;0)

Thanks for all of the new posts.

Okay then let's say that they are closing in on 6 Million " Member Accounts " ( yes indeed I said " Member Accounts " ). Perhaps that term will help to calm things down a bit  lol.

Math0t

If you do a random member search it quickly becomes clear that only a small percentage of the accounts are active members. For most the "Joined" date and "Last Online" date are equal and not recent.

Maybe 1 out of 20  are more or less active?

Estragon: You make a very good point, however some of the visitors to these forums seem to be very very obsessed with the numbers. Smile

DrSpudnik

They have pills for OCD now. You can stop the counting.

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the info DrSpudnik. Mind you I'm a bit leery of your diagnosis as I assume that most of your patients are of the ailing Parrot type  lol. However as I mentioned in the first post here this thread was started as a counter-balance to the thread that was complaining about the 5 Million plus number used by Chess.com. That other thread has now been locked but this one continues on because new posts keep arriving here. Smile

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the post Kenpo, you make some very good points in regards to how some of the sites on the internet work. A lot of the visitors here do not seem to have any idea of the vastness of the internet.

Almost 6 million! (give or take).

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the post Batgirl. Yes indeed both this thread and this site keep on getting more visitors which will of course add to the totals ( 5.78 Million and counting now for Chess.com ). Smile
