Hello to all, why do I lose when I run out of time but when my opponent runs out of time, it's a drawn game because of insufficient pieces? Sorry if this is a novice question, I just don't understand why my opponents get this break

If one side only has a king or just a king and a knight or a king and a bishop, it is all but impossible for it to mate its opponent, no matter how well it plays.

Under the rules here and in over the board competitions, if the side with superior forces runs out of time, and its opponent has "insufficient mating material", a draw will be declared.

If you are almost out of time, and can't see a quick checkmate, you can use this to your advantage. Eliminate all of your opponents remaining pawns and pieces and then you cannot lose. (You will draw if you run out of time but you will not lose.)

By the same token, if you have only one pawn left and your opponent who is almost out of time goes after it, try to protect it. As long as it lives, you can win (on time) because theoretically your pawn can become a queen, etc. and you could win.
