Time control dilemma

I am a beginner, but I can also say that I definitely play better with longer time controls.

I have a bit of dilemma which time control to choose.

On one hand, I am most comfortable playing 30 minute or 45/45 games. I also think this is the best time control to allow me to really learn chess well. But then on these time controls, quite often people abandon the game or give up for no reason. Connections are typically bad, and players quite weak. This is frustrating.

On the other hand I would like to play 10 minute games, as these are by far most popular, and most players are quite good and also have good connection. But it's simply too fast for me. I lose on time all the time, or make blunders.

What adds to frustration is that rating is the same for 10 minutes and 30 or 45 minute games. This leads to my rating being very unrealistic and unreliable, because when I play 10 minutes, it goes down... when I play 30 or 45 minutes, then I get some weak opponent and it goes up... And I don't know where I really stand.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Play 15/10 time control.

This way you start with 15 minutes and get 10 seconds per move. If you get a winning position early and your opponent decides to stall you, then you don't need to wait as long for the game to end.

there are some clubs that specialize in 45/45 games

look into those

15|10 is actually a brilliant time control lol. It's the only Rapid Time Control I like

I suggest you to play some unrated games in 10 minute category for practice. It won't affect your point at all. Once you practice for unrated 10 minute games, you can play real rated 10 minutes games. Best of lucks!happy.png

Google "45 45 league" ...

Also, there are tournaments with standard time controls you might want to try.

Don't worry about the rating. After a while it will become more realistic.

I think 15+0 is the best Time control.. Its a mixture of having time and on the other hand not having it (as compared to 30min).. So it can give u triple advantage-

1) Giving u time to think...( Opening as well as Midgames)

2) Time pressure in the endgames ( Trains you to find good moves in less time)

3) U dont have to wait more if your opponent has quit (in case) or has bad connection..

Good luck pal!
