Timer

I have played on this site with the timer running, which i don't like.

I recently joined the St Louis Chess Club, most everyone is playing 5 min. games. To me that is not chess, that is who can memorize the most opening moves, and the reply.

So when was the timer BS introduced and at 2, 5, 10, minute games?  What is the purpose of this?

For us average mortals, fast tcs are just for fun.

For masters it can be more serious. Just ask the GMs who compete in blitz tournaments.

Such play is nothing new, probably at least 100 years old using 10 seconds per move for example.

It's here to stay. No use complaining.

It was introduced as soon as we found out that you wanted to learn chess. It's sole purpose was to piss you off. I was against it.

PO, dog, wasnt complaining, just voicing my thought.

"But the thing that was great about Capablanca was that he really spoke his mind, he said what he believed was true, he said what he felt. He wanted to change the rules [of chess] already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. He was right. Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorisation and prearrangement. It’s a terrible game now. Very uncreative."

Why would anyone want to take a child to the St Louis Chess club, knowing that the  area 's basic premiss is about money and not expanding the mind?

No worries trysts, I figured you were. Smile I was addressing that to goldendog.

I guess me quoting Fischer and his view on the short timed game got my point across?  I know it's here to stay, doesn't mean I have to like it. Wink

Well, Fischer had huge insecurities.  IMO this was his way of excusing himself from staying in competitive chess.  After he reached the top he quit and liked to think of himself as the world champion long after he defaulted the title.

The quote by the way was about chess itself, not about speed games.

To be fair you did ask two questions which he did answer.  And the way I read it anyway "no use complaining" was more of a colloquialism thrown in at the end than it was literally telling you to not complain.

GeeJillyd ... the Chess Club in Saint Louis has a lot of opportunities to play more than just 5-minute Blitz games! The Friday Action Quad takes place every Friday night and is a round-robin G/25 with 5-second delay, the Wednesday Knights is a month-long tourney each Wednesday that is G/90, and there is also the Club ladder, which, if you haven't joined yet, is another great opportunity to get in some games that are of a longer time control. Outside of that, we've got a Chess Improvement class every Saturday, a Kids Class on Sundays, an intermediate class on Tuesday and a monthly lecture with GM Ben Finegold, all FREE for members if you're looking for opportunities to "expand your mind"

If you have any questions, ask for me, Mike Wilmering, and I'd be more than happy to find some programming that you'd enjoy!

The whole "played out" thing even if true has nothing to do with the vast majority of players.

If chess is "played out" it is only so for top level players in whose games it takes a relatively long time to get to unique, unstudied positions.

If you go to any open tournament (with a typical distribution of skill levels) you will see a relatively small number of draws and players almost always out of their memorized "repertoire" in a relatively small number of moves.

Thank you all for your thoughts on the timer thing. I always find it much more interesting to evaluate and consider others thoughts/ideas then my own.   Some valid points were made.

I will still hold to the thought that chess should not be timed, how is a person to learn and grow when they are focused on a clock?

It is a game that requires multiple levels of thought,(unlike most other games).  Pente is the only other board game I am familiar with that is similar to chess.

Beginners should let the fundamentals soak in before playing blitz on a frequent basis. Not much different than driving a car ... it's unwise to operate beyond a speed you can manage.
