You're doing fine. To play well in blitz you have to be able to recognize patterns quickly and react appropriately. Some get that simply by playing thousands of short games; kind of a modern approach but it works for some. Most still get better at blitz by doing what you're doing, playing long time controls to get better at chess and reviewing the results. Of course a short period of immersion in tactics sometimes helps to jumpstart your ability to think quickly in blitz, so maybe that would be a short term way to get better. I suck at blitz too, but then I'm old.
