How do you know that information is accurate?

Wikipedia is generally accurate.

Wikipedia is generally accurate.

Do you have any personal information as to how accurate that National Master title information is?

I bet you don't.

Yes, I know that Scotland where I live and as a member of the Scottish federation who has asked the question. We don't award NM titles here. They are virtually extinct in Europe now with just the odd country using them.

The Wikipedia may not be a flawless source, but it ties in with everything I am being told. I will find and quote another source if it will please everyone...

It is also very difficult to obtain information on how the NM title is used and where because it is so rare. It is not exclusively but mainly a USA thing without any doubt.

No, but I DO know Wikipedia is generally accurate. Unless it is a life or death senario, I'd be fine using Wikipedia.

I am not dissing NM or any other titles. I only asked the intial forum post here on titles to try to understand them better. I see 2200 and the associated title (for me where I live CM) as a realistic target to aim for. I would love a 2200 FIDE rating and CM title, that would make me very happy. It is for others to dismiss if they wish to, their entitled to that opinion.

Its only natural that a country like the USA would award the NM title given how few opportunities there are to play fide rated chess in the USA , especially in parts of the USA such as the southeast ...

I am not even going to put my interperetation of that article on anyone. Best read for yourself... it clarifies a lot for me.

If you have a title then you have earned it. But titles are what they are.

You can get NM titles in England.

You are too narrow minded.  The NM title is awarded by most chess federations, including England, The Bahamas, and Canada.

I know for a fact that many chess articles, including the chess titles article, are full of intentionally planted disinformation and outright lies.

I know this very personally.

Thats the non FIDE titles that England use. I'm saying nothing, look at the page and make up your minds...

Chess.com recognizes NM titles from US and Canada only which makes sense because our FIDE ratings are deflated due to a lack of fide rated tournaments.  In my last 6 tournaments I gained 90 uscf rating points, but 0 fide because they weren't fide rated.

wouldnt it be easier if every country had the same rating system, whether that be FIDE or whatever

Being from the UK, the typical titles I see are the occassional CM, along with FM/IM/GM.

However on chess.com I see quite a few players with the NM title. Oddly the rating for a NM player seems to vary from as low as 1700 all the way up to 2600.

What exactly is a NM title? What is involved or required in obtaining a NM title?

Not able to answer your question either, but i do know this guy has an NM title, without actually having a FIDE rating...

Avatar of TheOldReb

In the US you can get national titles based on your USCF rating , no FIDE rating is required . I have the NM title from both the US and Portugal . There are many strong US players that do not have FIDE ratings .

I am something of an expert on the National Master titles around the world.

I even penned the authoritative Wikipedia article on the same.

Ask me anything.
