To be a GM or Not To Be A GM

I've seen many highly rated players put down levels 500-1100 about GM dreams. Just about any median or lowish scored player, some who even just started, if they ask for advice on leveling up and years it takes to get to GM status,

Well...they're met with pretty rude and nasty opinions about never becoming one, and to quit.

Are those people just trolling, or do medium scored players really don't have a chance in becoming GM within years?

Research how many people play chess.  The research how many of them are GM's.

None of the above.

Answer is low self esteem

Dia, that's like saying, look at how many people run in PE/Gym, and look at how many people are professional track runners.

The difference between the PE kids and the professionals, is one side made it their entire lives, while the others are just doing it to do it.

You either dedicate yourself to something, and don't stop trying til you die, or you do it just to do it. Logic.

Exactly.  How many of those pe gym kids will run in the olympics?  I think what is getting lost in these numerous "Can i become a GM" threads is that you need to learn how to crawl before you can walk.

Just because you had your parents take you to toysrus and buy you a $10 plastic and cardboard chess set.  And just because you beat the only other kid you know at a game of chess, doesnt mean you can, or will become a GM.

I dont understand why people cant just take there time, have fun, learn, and enjoy the game.  No...now it has to be instant improvement, instant success, instant rating increase, instant tell me what i want to hear, not what i need to hear.

As Anand said.  If youre not a Master by the time your 10, forget about it.

If your ego is so fragile that you cant stand being told No.  Dont blame the person, or the game.  Take a look in the mirror.

I think it takes a mixture of factors to become a GM: natural abilities (memory, vision, analysis, problem-solving skills), ambition, perseverance, meeting the right people (GM trainors, encouraging parents and peers, chess culture environment, etc.), and starting young.  So, if a child learns to play, loves the game, loves to study the game, learns fast and maintains this interest throught his life, gets all the necessary training and success during tournaments, then, there are good chances of making it to a GM norm.  More often than not, one may lack the self-discipline, the will-power, the motivation or the abilities.  I wouls compare it to becoming an olympic athlete.

Who's rude, the people who realistically tell you to just enjoy the game and not to worry about becoming a gm, or the person who just stared playing and is only playing the game to be a gm.

Why not just worry about improving, look things up for yourself. Make up your own mind if you can be a gm or not.

Where do I go on chess.com to play 'against myself'? Not against the computer or another member but against myself. Would appreciate the help. Thanks

Youre looking for the very badly disguised "I like to masterbate" thread.

I remember an interview with Magnus Carlsen in which he said that he has studied at least 10000 games - that and probably all 9000+ diagrams in the FIDE Encyclopaedia of Chess Endings, one may presume.  If an amateur adult chess player wants to pursue a GM title I say go for it - but the person needs to make an informed decision, and probably that is the best way to approach untitled adults with lofty chess aspirations: Rather than be negative just ask if you can help the person make an informed decision.  Be friendly and a friend, give information, and let the person decide on his or her own that it is (or isn't) possible which could need some additional time playing and studying chess.  People need time to make decisions, and being non-neutral - especially before the person is prepared for it - could cause defensiveness and a lack of receptivity to the needed information which is being offered!

Lmao, I couldn't careless about GM position. Chess players make no money. I use my improvement in chess, to also improve my real life decision making skills. It's been scientifically proven that those who learn the skills of chess, automatically include those same skills in life and school.

And do I need to mention Italo Romano?

Natural skill and talent?

He's a professional skateboarder.

And he's legless.

0 amount of legs.

And he's pro.

As are some other legless boarders.

If legless people can do the impossible, I think analysis and critical thinking skills can be gained thoroughly enough to better any skill or advantage.

But as the smartest guy on this thread said: "Self-esteem"

Also, as an added bonus to dispute your "factoid" MANY current GMs did not obtain Master by 10, some even started chess really late in their teens and are now GMs. No lies on my thread, Dia Dia

You have the perfect approach to the game.  To improve you life.  use what chess teaches you, and apply that to life.

It's arrogant, low rated players asking how soon they can become GMs that are the TROLLS, not the experienced players answering them.

Ask about becoming a master instead and you'll get answers more to your liking.

Now that seems more reasonable than beating down someone's "dreams". No disagreement here. Personally, I'd suggest to anyone, to never ask how or if they can get to their goal.

I see nothing wrong with setting goals and asking for advice on getting there, but if you tell us you're in your 20s and you've decided you'd like to be a GM we're going to have some fun with that.

Why do people who started playing chess two days ago, always aim at a GM title? For example, if you just started playing the violine and if you still had great difficulties hitting the right tunes, you would not ask yourself how long it will take to become one of the best players in the world, but when you'll be able to play a song without totally butchering it.

you are going to want to be the GM. and what is a violine?  is it like the celioline?

I think it's that little thing, called being human. I took up the violin, sucked at first. Then I saw the London Philharmonic perform. Decided, that looks cool, I wanna do that, and guess what? Stayed in first chair (top position) six years in a row, and recieved scholarships for it. Am I in the London Phil now? No. Because the violin is boring as heck and doctors are cooler. Dreams grow and die. Any living robot knows that.

Oh and I'm certain no one puts their all into something without having some longterm dream. You don't say, I'm gonna study biochemistry, and read every book, and learn everything, and have no desire to actually go do it. If you do, you're cool weird and you should be our President.

I've seen people set the goals of going over 2000 in rating and over 2200 and achieving it. I was happy for them.

One dude I saw develop into an actual GM. He would say when he hit 1500 he thought he was ALL BAD and laugh about it.
