To Chessbase or not to Chessbase?

I'm wondering if Chessbase is worth buying? I've already got Fritz13 and am used to the interface now so the next step is probably CB. It is dear however, and I could buy a number of books in it's place.... So I put it to you, is it worth buying for study purposes? If so, should I buy the full boat or is the basic package all one needs?

I downloaded SCID vs PC and all the games from Mark Crowther's TWIC. I am very happy!

If you already have Fritz, then Chessbase might not be necessary.

If you are going to buy Chessbase, then you should also get a big up-to-date database to go with it.  (My version of Chessbase came with BIg Database 2010, which lacks any recent games.)
