It's true that resigning never saves any battles and you can always potentially save a game if you choose to fight instead of quit, but sometimes, it just feels better to put yourself out of your misery, you know?

Exactly, i mean you can resign if you are playing rapid, but in blitz and bullet? no way, fight until end. hope he losts internet connection 
Games are often lost that should be won. There is zero reason to resign if you can spot even the smallest chance of a cheap shot.

Not true. There can be many reasons to resign a chess game.

I don't enjoy the the "grinding away"
If I accidentally leave a queen hanging, for example, lets just play again.
Skill, tactics, strategy...not grinding.

Mostly I fight to the bitter end. But I have had one opponent who resigned, as I see it, too early. I think he/she still could fight and have a chance, even if I had captured the queen. So - yes, I think one should not resign until you can see a mate in one og two...
The strong players know when to resign or not to resign.
We have all been in this situation....
You are playing a game against a competent player, and there is a major blunder and one of you is way ahead. The game is basically over for all practical purposes, and yet the game continues...ad bordem.
Now, we all blunder from time to time...sometimes you just didn't see it; left yourself wide open.
Even GMs make mistakes! Its happens! The 2nd law of thermodynamics.
...many continue the game, hoping for a blunder on the other player's part.
So, I ask, "What's the point of playing out the game?" We're not professionals. There are no advertising dollars in the offing. There is no "money on the table" Its about having "Fun".
What's the big deal about resigning instead of wasting both of your time? Reach across the table, shake the victors hand, and have a rematch!
The fun part of chess isn't cleaning up a board with an overwhelming superior force.
HOWEVER, we all know that name of the game is capture the king, and the comparative sizes of force are immaterial.
For example, I can think of one game where Alekhine gave away piece after piece for position, and then dropped the net, and Checkmate! And De Legal vs. St. Brie 1750, is an amazing example of sacrificing Queen for position and....Checkmate!
