If I  was in a truly helpless position (I have no counterplay and behind lots of material), then I'll resign.
If I was in a loosing position, I wouldn't resign, because my oppenent might make a big mistake.

It depends on the player if he is gonna make a move that didn't put me in checkmate so i would rather still till the end.

if it's an OBVIOUS loss, I resign, regardless of the opponent.  It's just not fair to the opponent to drag it out in a game that I have no chance of winning.    If it looks real bad and I'm playing a player with a much better rating than me, I resign and move on to something more fun.  If I have a small chance against a player with an equal or lower rating, I keep playing because of the chance of a blunder.  it all depends on the circumstances.  I do NOT play just because I might learn something.  I can learn chess without getting destroyed in a game I have no chance of winning.

I couldn't have said it better.  If the situation is completely lost, why play? go on to another game and have fun.  to admit defeat when it's inevitable is a good thing.
