You need to learn some of the theory first, before playing the Caro-Kann. In fact, that goes for playing any new opening. You need to learn which moves to play and when.

A 500 rated player certainly doesn't need to learn opening theory.

And when you start learning an opening, it's mostly about middlegame ideas, not not about "which moves to play and when".

At a beginner and intermediate level, it's one of the most solid openings you can choose. If you are losing a lot with it, it's because you aren't playing it correctly. As an example of how to play it, here's an intermediate level game I played with it from last night where I had 95% accuracy. I spend a lot of time in my videos explaining the concepts and thought processes for novice players to follow.

It's a skill/compatibility issue. So many players play it with a 50%+ win rate, including myself.

Maybe the Caro Kann isn't the right the opening for you. Keep on experimenting with new openings. Something will definitely work out
