And when you start learning an opening, it's mostly about middlegame ideas, not not about "which moves to play and when".

At a beginner and intermediate level, it's one of the most solid openings you can choose. If you are losing a lot with it, it's because you aren't playing it correctly. As an example of how to play it, here's an intermediate level game I played with it from last night where I had 95% accuracy.
