Sort:

Kasparov is the best chess player of all time but if you make this list who is top tactical player then i give you the list below.

1- Mikhail Tal (If you do not agree with me just watchinng his game.He is a real chess magician)

2- Paul Morphy (He is a legend of tactics mosly in italian line)

3- Garry  Kasparov (He has No real weakness in chess)

4-Alexandar Alekhine (Probably Kasparov most influenced by Alekhine)

5-Bobby Fiscer (His theory in chess was sac sac sac and mate [LOL] )

If you do not agree with me then tell me a reasonable cause.

Thanks all.

Good Luck for your chess game !!!

It's interesting that none of  those players are active today.

"5-Bobby Fiscer (His theory in chess was sac sac sac and mate [LOL] "

This is just flat out wrong. Fischer was a charter member of the Pawnsnatcher's Anonymous club. He routinely grabbed his opponent's sacs and held on to win. One of his most famous lines, the Najdorf Poisoned Pawn variation, is an excellent example of his chess philosophy, at least as Black. Grab material, hang on to the endgame, and win. His chess philosophy as White was a bit different: he adhered to classical principles as White and often won in the style of Capa rather than the style of Alekhin or Kasparov.

But today's top players are more tactical than most of those players on the list. Caruana, Aronian, Topalov, and Nakamura all relish complex tactical battles and can work out deep calculations at least as well as Tal, perhaps even better than Tal! That's not blasphemy. Among his contemporaries, Keres and Bronstein may have been better at tactics than Tal was. Tal's tactical vision was good, but what set him apart was his imagination.

Tal was very creative and skilled at attacking, but I don't see how he could be the most talented in the overall game of chess. He did manage to win one championship match but he immediately lost it and never participated in another one. He had health problems some years but even during his prime years when he won the championship I don't think you can say he was anywhere near as dominant as Bobby Fischer/Garry Kasparov. He has some of the most fun games to look at but I don't think he should be considered among the all time greats as an overall chess player.

Without considering the current players, my list of greatest tactical players is:

1. Morphy

2. Lasker

3. Alekhine

4. Kasparov

5. Spassky

6. Tal

7. Rubinstein

8. Keres

9. Blackburne

10. Bronstein

(I didn't include Fischer because Fischer's style was not really 'tactical'. He had a more 'normal' style.)

I like your list but the current generation of players is very impressive also and there are so many terrific tactical games being played and not given wide distribution now. When the current top players have had another 20 years or so of games

... ..continued.... to  review, we will probably have a number of others to definitely add to your list and maybe even bump some of the older ones out.

Albin Planinc deserves consideration on any list of great tactical players. It’s unfortunate that his career was cut short by mental illness.

I would  nominate Victor Korchnoi to this list not just for his ability to initiate tactical combinations but for his ability to find new ways out of his opponents attacks when playing on the highest levels. Petrosian also could defuse dangerous tactics before they could get going. The Polgar sisters get my nod for best women tacticians.

I would include Lasker in any list of best tacticians.

Lasker was a funny player. Many games of his I've seen he got into a mess early on, then complicated the position as much as possible, before navigating the complications better than his opponents to win.

And a poster not long ago suggested I should consult you, masteryoda?

I might have to start looking elsewhere.

Anyone who does not agree with 1. Tal has either not seen tal's game or he does not know what tactics are. Tal showed the beauty of the game by playing out of the box moves that no one would ever play. ih8 sens is right. i will agrue tal till death.

Hasta la vista, baby!

There's a new book on San Luis which renews the old rumors that Topalov cheated, especially in the first half of the tournament. I remember reading one GM's interview who suggested that Topalov later accused Kramnik of cheating in their match (a patently ridiculous claim when you look at the moves they played) in much the same manner that he had cheated.

I think this list is romantic, and doesn't give enough credit to the brilliant tacticians that are playing today.
