"NOTE: For each player, the "peak" five-year span of their career is identified. All possible five-year spans are considered (always starting in January) in which the player had an active rating for 60 consecutive months. The five-year span with the highest average rating (across all 60 months) is considered to be the player's "peak" five year range."

The complete lists includes 100 players and is well worth checking out! Of course Chessmetrics uses a "proprietary" rating method here which is open to debate, but nonetheless comes up wit many surprising and unexpected results - for instance, the much-maligned and usually ignored Spassky is #10 on the Peak 20 year list (1960-1979)!

Pillsbury really was a surprise for me!

Yeah me too! You should check out all the complete lists for lots more surprises!

You know, I often wonder if all world champions are considered chess geniuses, or are some considered a chess genius, while others are considered not? I don't know hardly a thing about Pillsbury except he was considered a "chess genius".

They're all considered chess geniuses by me. As for Pillsbury, I believe he was pretty one-dimensional away from the board, ie, his entire life revolved around chess and he had no other career or occupation.

Steinitz life revolved around chess---so did Capablanca's. Yeah, I know Capa was a diplomat. His job was to travel around the world playing chess and putting Cuba on the face of the map. Alekhine's life revolved around chess as did Tal's. Petrosian did nothing but chess, Spassky did nothing but chess. Karpov is pretty much a one trick pony. Now Fischer was an all around genius. He ran a counselling service whereby he would bring warring parties together and smooth out the wrinkles. He was in the forefront of the Ecumenical movement to bring peace and stability to all religious faiths. He was the president of the "Love Thy Mother" foundation. And last but not least---he was a significant mover in the hands across the ocean program ---giving assistance to our Russian comrades.

Actually, I think you are a little off when you say Pillsbury was one dimensional.

The guy could bake a mean biscuit---Pally!

I thought Alekhine was a spy?

raul72: Tal, Petrosian and Spassky were all "journalists" albeit strictly chess journalists. Petrosian was editor of 64 magazine until Fischer wiped him off the Board in the Candidates Final Match, 1971. I assume most if not all of what you wrote was tongue-in-cheek BTW.

trysts: Who was Alekhine a spy for? That's news to me (and probably everyone else). Like Bogolyubov and Keres, he was considered a Nazi collaborator because he played in Nazi sponsored tnmts is this what you're referring to?

Yep! His code name was Alekhine 007.

Thats a joke son! I've told Nazgulls mom that I would let him know when I'm joking. Otherwise he would write angry cards and letters! Momma Nazgull you have my sympathy.

Spassky and Tal cared about nothing but chess ? Fischer was an all-round genious ? You are an all-round idiot.

Hey Lord nazgull. let me try to explain life to you. Spassky and Tal's life revolved around chess. Spassky is still travelling around playing chess---and if Tal was alive, thats what he would be doing as well. Do you understand that cement head?

I forgot this is the internet and I should have said OK, now I am joking (about Fischer). Tell me Lord Nazgull---how long has it been since you have been unable to tell the difference between a joke and reality?

Avatar of Skwerly

where did you get these numbers?  i was under the impression that alekhine had been "estimated" at 2690 years ago.  of course, i think that's low but there was no ELO system when he was playing and so a WHOLE lot of homework would have to be done in order to guesstimate this stuff.  :)  cool list though.

Avatar of NimzoRoy

Skwerly: Go to the link I provided there should be an explanation of how chessmetric ratings work they are not = to USCF or FIDE ratings

Avatar of TheOldReb

If Fischer wasnt a genius how could he read in several languages even though he didnt finish high school ? Lots of drop outs do that do they ?  Wink
