I used to abort d4 and c4 and Nf3 openings.
Top Reasons for Aborting Games?
My main reason for aborting a game is because I clicked on the wrong seek. The list moves very quickly at times (and on many sites) and sometimes I simply click the wrong one. I'll usually send a lil one line apology simultaneously. I've also ocassionally (rarely) aborted a game when a lower rated player opens with something really stupid (1. d3 looking for a reversed pirc) or something like that. I'll usually play it out but sometimes I'm feeling moody and stupid stuff like that offends me coming from players who I'm likely to beat in respectable openings.
But yeah, number one reason for aborting: misclicks.
Heh, not liking the first move is the worst reason to abort the game -- especially one as common as 1. e4, d4, c4, or Nf3 [typed before I saw other responses, this is IMO anyway...]
Sometimes I've accidentally sent a seek with the wrong parameters and someone immediately accepts it, so I abort. I think also sometimes people don't understand lag, to you it's just started but on their screen they've waited 10 seconds for the first move to appear and abort out of impatience -- or possibly realizing the connection isn't good they don't want your clock to be adjusted many seconds each move (which for a long time control is a silly reason to abort).
The week or two I played blitz here I was like you, I'd play anyone who accepted my seek.
On live chess I play 15-minute games exclusively, and anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the time, an opponent will abort the game, sometimes immediately, other times after a 10 second wait, and other times after my first move. It usually happens against higher rated players, but occasionally against lower rated ones. I aborted a game once by mistake, but otherwise I take on all comers, so I'm wondering what's the general impetus behind aborted games. A lot of higher rated players graciously accept my challenges, so it can't all be about an aversion to playing lower rated players. I've read that an e4 opening playing white is considered lame in some chess playing circles, and that's also resulted in some aborted games by my would-be opponents. Any other reasons for aborting a game?
