Tournaments Need To Be Gender Split For The Preservation of the Female Community

OTB Tournaments need to be split by gender for the sake of the preservation of the female chess playing community.

Listen, friends.

The chess community, while intelligent, varied in background and accessible, has a major issue when it comes to the treatment of women.

Women are constantly being mistreated, both in OTB tournaments and online. It is practically every other game in live chess when I get someone trying to flirt with me or get my number.

Have guys really sunk that low?

But that isn't why I'm here. There's little to nothing that can be done about the treatment of females online (other than disabling chat automatically, which I have done). We will always be treated differently. And before anybody asks, no, I will not change my profile to hide my gender identity. There are plenty of benefits to being female online, as well. Guys need to know that they don't encompass the entire chess playing community. They might be the king of the hill right now, but not for long.

Anyways, I'm here to discuss the treatment of females in OTB tournaments. To sum it up, it's getting ridiculous.

Can guys take no for an answer? It seems that for most, the answer is no. Constantly, I get pursued by guys asking for my number, to go out, whatever. Boys need to accept that not every girl is going to be attracted to them, and most won't, not if you keep pursuing us with an unrelenting stream of questions, flirtatious comments, and general immaturity.

You might be wondering why I am referring to them as boys, rather than men. Were they all underage?

No, none of them were. They are boys, because men take no to mean no. Men get over themselves. They deal with the fact that plenty of females won't be attracted to them. It doesn't faze them. A male who can't take no for an answer is weak. A male who can't take no for an answer is a coward. A male who can't take no for an answer isn't a man, regardless of his age. He is a boy. A mere child.

How do we solve this problem? It’s clear that guys aren’t willing to change. Yet, a solution is still necessary. So what is the solution?

It is simple.

Have 2 sections for any large tournaments; Female and Open (for each rating bracket), and have less prizes for the Female only section (as there is less competition).

This A: solves the problem of relentless f**kboys hitting on women at chess tournaments, driving many from the game, and B: encourages women to get better at chess (as they have the opportunity to participate in a less populated bracket than normal). It is also encouraging for women to play against all women over the course of the tournament, as it makes them feel like they belong. Playing against/seeing almost all guys can be intimidating, and combine that with guys hitting on women and we have a recipe to drive away even the most headstrong of women.

You guys want chess to expand as much as possible? Follow this plan. If not? Go ahead and drive away all the chess-playing females. We’ll be waiting for you.

I see what you did there, A_L_I_V_E.

I think the majority of men do not set their profile pics as their own face but I could be wrong.

What does that have to do with my post? Contribute to the conversation or don't comment.

The problem lies in a small fraction of guys, not everyone. The way the OP is treating this is as if we were in the 19th century again.

EDIT: Also, doing this would cause a larger gender split.

In a world where most men set their profile picture as their own face, and the majority of the chess playing community is female, the attractive men would get hit on more.  If you want to completely remove the benefits AND the consequences of being a female in a male dominated chesse world, changing your profile pic for online tournies might be a good thought.  I can't speak for other in person tournies or anything but I think the rest of the post seems good.

The amount of problems with your so-called "solution" are innumerous in number.

I think the problem lies with the OP being a recurring troll account using a lazy, single-note gimmick.

"And before anybody asks, no, I will not change my profile to hide my gender identity. Posting an argument with no support. Nice.

Oh, and you would do well to specify what country you are referring to. I can assure you, treatment of women in the 19th century varied greatly based on what country you were in. If you were at all educated about history, you would know this.

Stay on topic, please. This is a civil conversation about a real-world issue, not yet another place to assume that every female account on this site is a troll account. Leave that to Neverfearthedark's posts.

The Victorian Era was heavily implied, or, in other words, Britain.

Oh but of course, being educated about history, you already knew that.

OP is gonna be angrier. And I treat everyone the same, no matter if it's online or not.
