Tragedy at the GRENKE Open Today

ChrisWainscott
Alireza Firouzja forfeited a game rather than play an Israeli player as that would have gotten him potentially severe sanctions.

Sad.
blueemu

He should move to Canada, where we don't pressure chess players over politics.

ChrisWainscott
I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t move at some point soon.
Adyablue
I believe the organizers changed Alireza’s opponent.

Look friend I don't care whether that to which religion you belong to or to which country you belong to, but seriously I would like to allude you that don't write such things on forum.Rather you should feel sorry for Alireza that he forfeited the game.

Poor guy lost so many rating points

Wait, he actually lost to a 1945 rated player?

Unplayed games do not count towards ratings.

He's right, the forfeiture did not cost him any rating points, however he lost the following round to a 1900 rated player because he left his rook en prise

Wow.

DamonevicSmithlov

Maybe severe time pressure caused it?  When he played 36. Rxe6 Kxd4 it was right before move 40 which Im assuming is the first time control there.

DamonevicSmithlov

I looked at the 4th round game where he dropped the rook vs a 1945 rated opponent. It looked even for most of the game, he certainly wasnt crushing her like youd expect from a rating difference like that. I bet he had undue psychological issues left over from having to forfeit round 3. It mustve hurt his concentration severely.

Edit: just looked up tournament results and after that loss he won his last 5 games. He won 7 out of 8 played. He only dropped 2 rating points for that tournament. The lady he lost to was having a stunning tournament for her level. She gained 78 rating points (now 2023), her performance for the event was about 2315 or so. She beat some other masters too. She finished with 5 out of 9.

Why didn't he take a bye rather than forfeit the game?

Can't have it both ways bearing in mind what you've got in your profile.

DamonevicSmithlov

I think taking a bye would have to be done well in advance, before the pairings were known. I don't think that anyone can look at the already posted pairings and then request a bye.

nothing written on my profile has anything to do with the problem of muslims not playing Israelites in chess games.

Rockyslide4

Disgraceful that crap like this pollutes the chess world today.

But frankly, no one should be the least bit surprised. This is Iran we're talking about, for crying out loud!
