Training Tactics Revisited

I like the tactical trainer, but I feel like problem rating is a bit messed up. Today, for example, I got one puzzle wrong that was rated at ~1900 and had a very unusual and counter-intuitive tactical idea with trapping the queen with a knight and pawns. Then I got one right after a bit of thinking that was just a usual elimination of the defender 3-move puzzle, and that one was rated at almost 2500.

One thing I noticed about players like you (the elite, over 2000) is that the tactical trainer more closely matches your actual rating as does others. My theory on that is you made it over the "openings hurdle" and have had hundreds of games to use your mid game skills. Since TT doesn't cover openings, those of us who suck at openings may be good at tactical thinking, but never get there in actual games, due to our lack of opening skills. Thus the skewed ratings on players under 2000. That's just IMHO though.

Well, I am by no means a part of the elite, of course - but I see your point. happy.png Indeed, people with more experience have more well-rounded skills, with no glaring weaknesses (and no incredible strengths, unless we are talking about titled players), and tactical rating may roughly approximate their overall strength.

I was hoping that all the recent tweaks to the tactics trainer would eventually result in more... realistic ratings.

Apparently, a naive expectation; my rating seems even more inflated than before... or maybe it's just more volatile...

I like that there is a wider range of problem ratings, but I question the legitimacy of some of these ratings. May it's something that'll take time to correct, dunno...

i have finally accepted that the tt rating is arbitrary and near meaningless- though i'm not sure i can ever aviod wanting to get "a better score"

there were a few i did this morning and i made some move order mistakes

it reminded me to look that one extra move/step before committing- so, even though i lost some points the lesson was reinforced and, i hope, can serve me in my games today- for once i didnt feel upset i lost rating

Yeah it seems to have a fickle quality about it. If you play on a good day you do well. On a bad day you lose. I still enjoy it, not so much for the rating anymore.
