Trouble sleeping

When I play and/or study chess at night just before I go to bed, I sometimes have trouble falling asleep.  I think the intense concentration and deep thinking causes my mind to become too stimulated to get to sleep quickly.  Does anyone else have this problem?

goldendog

It could well be. Blindfold players have notoriously complained of a scrambled brain well after their exhibitions.

Yes I have the same problem when playing evening league games, I'm not too bad in congresses because they generally finish at about 6:30pm. The league games can go on until around 10:30 and then I struggle to sleep. If you can avoid it, don't play after a certain time however, if you play OTB league chess, you cannot really avoid it.

Try doing something completely different immediately before going to bed e.g. horse riding or juggling.

The method Anand prefers to have a relaxing sleep after a hard chess day is running in the gym.

Exercise would probably help. Go for a walk/run, do pushups, etc etc. Less damaging to the liver than Scotch.

Exercise directly before trying to sleep is well known not to work.

And you are right. Heh, just goes to show, don't go to a chess website for health advice >.<

Try meditation?

Shivsky

Same  situation....my wife comments on this behavior often saying "it works better than coffee!".

I usually read ( non-chess) or watch mindless entertainment on tv to eventually massage the brain back to its resting state.

Chess_Enigma

I have the same problem especially after playing with out site of the board or doing puzzles, I now read chess books with out looking to much at the variations before going to sleep.

he looks like he runs a lot.  suggests he find his job quite easy!

Nytik

Simple solution; don't try so hard!

When I play league games (OTB, of course) I just relax and have fun. The end result is that I haven't blown a fuse in my head just because I was trying to win! (Or against a strong opponent, survive!)

True.  Exercise earlier in the day.  Utilize daytime energy so it doesn't turn into nighttime energy.  Try also B vitamins. It's about utilizing energy when you need it.  Take Bs in the earlier part of your day

I was about to say Lisa, perhaps looking for a different kind of mate would help. I get plenty of exercise at night and have no trouble sleeping, Kupov.

LordStannis

The more I try to stay awake the faster I fall asleep. Maybe it could work for you too.Smile

Yes, horse riding is a great thing to do to calm down, but if your horse starts jumping in L-like formations, good job, you're dreaming and asleep.

Reading? No. Unless it's stuff like Harry Potter. Interesting stuff will keep you awake.

Enslaving animals and riding them? No.

Sex? No. As you should be available for more than a "quickie".

Opiates? Yes. There are drug houses on every corner now, they're called pharmacies.Wink

Real simple before you study at night get some Johnson and Johnson Baby oil and rub it on your body. Preferable the legs, arms, chest and head. After you finish and lay down to sleep it hit you all of the sudden. Lights out.

Hmm, I might just try that on a night when I don't play chess ;)
